Hello, I'm Andres Alcantar, Chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission. The Lone Star
State bounced back in April, expanding payrolls in Texas by 33,100 jobs. Texas has added more
than 326,000 jobs over the year, with every major industry showing positive growth. In
April, there were 11,146,000 jobs in our state. The unemployment rate in Texas was unchanged
at 6.4 percent in April. It remains well below the nation's unemployment rate of 7.5 percent.
Over the month, eight of the 11 major industries in Texas saw positive growth. The state's
largest industry, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, led the way adding 16,000 jobs
in April. This industry has grown by over 58,000 jobs over the year. The Construction
industry has added jobs at a faster rate than any other, at 7.1 percent. In April, Construction
added 6,000 jobs. Mining and Logging, which includes oil and gas related jobs, has grown
by nearly 17,000 jobs over the year, including 2,500 added in April. Professional and Business
Services, which includes high-paying tech jobs, added 8,000 jobs in April, for a total
of 62,000 jobs added over the year. The private sector continues to drive growth in Texas.
Private employers added more than 28,000 jobs in April, for nearly 307,000 positions added
over the year. That's an annual growth rate of 3.4 percent. At the Texas Workforce Commission,
we recognize that today's youth are tomorrow's workforce. That's why we're encouraging eligible
teens to look for jobs this coming summer. Teens interested in work this summer can go
to WorkInTexas.com to find opportunities, or contact their local Workforce Solutions
office. Thank you!
