Welcome everyone to Video 10.2, Canadian Experience.
And this is the second video in Week 10.
There are two readings this week.
The first is written by Sakamoto, Chin, and Young,
entitled, "Canadian Experience –
Employment Challenges and Skilled Immigrants –
A Close Look at Tacit Knowledge," and there's the URL.
The second is authored by Teelucksingh and Galabuzi,
and is called "Working Precariously,"
and there is the URL for the second reading.
We suggest reading the Sakamoto et al reading first,
because it gives a general overview.
The topic – Canadian Experience.
Key issues are high rates of unemployment
and underemployment for immigrants,
lack of recognition of foreign credentials and experience,
barriers of language and communication, discrimination,
and employer's requirement for Canadian experience.
Reading two – "Working Precariously."
Next, we suggest the Teelucksingh et al reading
entitled "Working Precariously."
They introduce an equity concept called representation.
Here is an example of this concept.
Are east-Asian students under-represented in gifted classes?
Are east-Asian students over-represented in special education classes?
The number of east-Asian students
in either gifted or special education classes
should be representative of the number of east-Asian students
in the general school population.
Can you apply this concept of representation
to the "Working Precariously" reading?
Representation.
Are racialized groups advancing proportionally?
Do they have rates of unemployment
that are representative of their population?
Is their income spread representative of their overall population?
This article offers data to show that employment discrimination exists.
What are the steps needed to address this issue?
Come to the tutorial for Week Ten having read these two articles,
and be prepared to discuss them.
Synthesis questions, Week Ten.
One – do you believe that the readings for this week
have established that employment discrimination exists?
Two – what do you think are the underlying causes?
Three – do the readings help you to understand barriers that exist?
How would you explain these barriers?
Four – what kinds of policies, initiatives, or programs in your view
are needed to address the issues in these policies?
Five – how would you suggest that the discrimination in employment
should be addressed?
