Some people say, "Boys will be boys," and it should not be looked at as "boys will be
boys." Bullying should be taken seriously every single time.
The sessions that people will have opportunities to attend today, it will give them insight
of things that they can take back to their systems to use as resources to make things
better in their education agencies. 173 people have checked in today. They range
in age from 7 to 83, I think. They are from all over Tennessee.
74 percent of 8 to 11 year olds, given a survey, report they have been victims of bullying.
Did you know, that 160,000 children every day miss school because they are fearful of
being bullied? Growing up homosexual in Tennessee has not
been the easiest thing in the world but I think everyone who grows up with that always
has their fair share of bullying in high school and middle school.
Just going through that and going through those kinds of experiences, you really learn
that what you say, what you do, really affects other people, more than you might think.
Bullying is universal; it doesn't affect just one group of people.
The thing is, if they don't feel safe and comfortable in school, then they're not going
to succeed in school and then they're not going to succeed in life.
