bjbj In this case, you see Italian glass from the 1950 s and 1960 s. The multi-colored bottle
you see in front of you that is covered with different kinds of netting and stripes is
the "Happy Bottle", designed by bottiglian designer Dino Martens. In this bottle, Martins
has used a variety of techniques. None of the decoration is painted, but is all made
of embedded glass canes in a very complex and difficult technique. This bottle is very
characteristic of Italian glass, with its humor, up beat feeling, color. In this bottle
we have a feeling of happiness and joy. Although the technique is a very complicated and very
sophisticated, we have the feeling that it was done spontaneously, even effortlessly.
The bottle was made by taking patterned glass canes, and assembling them on a metal plate.
The plate is heated, and then, while the glassblower is blowing the bottle shape, the glassblower
who was working with Dino Martens picks up all of the pieces onto the outside of the
glass. What is very difficult here, is to keep all those elements straight. The glass
naturally wants to twist and curve, and it was very difficult in this particular piece
to keep, for example, that long stripe of white netting absolutely straight. Dino Martens
was a very prolific designer. He did not make the glass himself, but worked with one of
the many famous glassmasters on Murano, who are acknowledged to be the best glassblowers
in the world. hQ/^ In this case, you see Italian glass from the 1950 s and 1960 WrightDC Normal.dot
