Weaving, knotting, and knitting techniques work their way into design in traditional
and modern ways, with color playing a main role. A traditional wicker nest, by Dedon,
called Nest Rest, is a cocoon-like space, where you can get away from it all. Colorful
examples of weaving, also by Dedon, are the fedro floor rockers. Here, a sweater becomes
part of a chair with a web-like effect. This series of knots that Rick Tenvelten experimented
with gave raise to this chair called Single Knotted Wire, which is all one piece made
of continuous knots. Rope is another material being used to create shape as seen here with
a coil forming a modular seating arrangement. As we saw last year, crochet for light fixtures
is a still an artisanal means of creating shades, and cross-stitching on wool felt was
used by Gania Blascoe in the canapous rug collection. Rugs, wall hangings, seatings,
and pillows use this technique in a granny gone modern look.
