There are few things that make a city centre pavement more unsightly
than chewing gum stains. Yet they are a feature on 90 percent of our
streets. It costs much more to remove a chewing gum stain than it
does to buy the chewing gum in the first place. An average piece of gum
costs just three pence. It costs ten pence to remove it from the
pavement.
We have two dedicated power washing teams working in Belfast City
Centre.
Our hours of work would be five in the morning to one in the afternoon.
It would usually take roughly an hour for the section we have
cordoned off at the moment. Because we have to remove the gum and have
to wash that area down after it. No sooner maybe you would have a street
done someone comes along and throws gum down again, and you’re sent back
in to do that street again. It’s a never ending process,
constant working to remove gum in Belfast City Centre.
