Single Hop is the new Pinot Noir. Every one is doing it
"Single hop is the new black." I like the fact that Brewdog also
is getting on board, but in it's own way. They've made a 7,5% ABV base IPA
that they use different hops in, but not the 'usual' American hop varieties, but
Bramling Cross, Sorachi Ace, Nelson Sauvin and Citra.
On a serious note, I like that now also beer is allowed in multi-packs, not just the
set of Swedish snapses 'Svenska Snapsar' or whatever it's called.
June 1st, 99,60SEK, about 100 crowns (~£10) for 4 brews. Works for me.
Let's get started with Bramling Cross, a British hop variety.
It's a bit funny. It's an American IPA, but with this British hop, en masse!
Citric and earthy notes, a little spicy, black currant, and plums.
Nice bitterness, FUN!
Now Citra.
Wow, a very clear grapefruit note, almost the zest of bloodgrapefruit.
Mm, nice. I like this. Citra is a great tasting hop!
A lot of grapefruit, citrus, a little pineapple, almost physalis and cumquat.
Damn that's good.
Sorachi Ace.
Sorachi Ace is always fun.
A little citrus, some gooseberry, coconut and chewing gum. Very odd.
And very seducing.
Finishing off with Nelson Sauvin.
This we recognize from Punk IPA. Black currant leaves, lychee.
I wonder if it has lost some of its aroma. It's there, but not very clear.
I'd say the Citra is my favorite. It has a clear, simple grapefruit tone. GREAT.
Sorachi Ace was the one that surprised me the most. It tasted of coconut and chewing gum.
Bramling Cross was a bit of a surprise, it was the first I had. It is a classical British hop,
and my expectations we completely crushed. I was a little disappointed with the Nelson Sauvin.
i was expecting more aroma and taste. I am trying the first batch made, I don't know if it's the same being
released at Systembolaget, but I'll pick uo a 4-pack to check if tastes the same.
Maybe this beer has gotten a little tired since I received it.
Summarizing. Great fun! Shall we say "Tokgod" (6/7) "excellent" ?Let's.
Some beers, maybe "Bättre" (5/7) "better", Citra maybe "En Upplevelse" (7/7) "awesome."
Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I really loved it, nice and refreshing.
One fun thing with single hop beers, is that you can make cuvées!
You mix the beers as you like! What happens if you mix …
Citra with … Nelson Sauvin?
A more complex taste. The citra has receded, the Nelson is more obvious.
How about adding a little Bramling X? Maybe you can see where I am heading?
Like so.
I think we are getting close to a Hardcore IPA.
Bramling X + Citra + Nelson Sauvin = pretty damn close to Hardcore IPA.
Let's add some Sorachi Ace. All four in one glass.
Was this the point? - I don't think so.
I think the last shot of Sorachi Ace was wrong. Maybe use a little less.
I don't know, this wasn't all bad… Not bad at all.
I think I like it better without the Sorachi Ace.
So, mix equal parts Bramling X, Citra and Nelson Sauvin and see what you get!
Maybe you'll taste a little Hardcore IPA. Cheers!
