Hello everybody and welcome to my new review
Today we're going to visit one of oldest breweries in Austria: Schloss Eggenberg Brauerei.
Beer we're going to talk about today is one of many beers which Schloss Eggenberg Brewery offers.
"Schloss" means "castle", infact the brewery is inside a castle.
We are in Oberösterreich (sorry for my german...), in italian it's "Alta Austria",
nearby a village, Vorchdorf, less or more between Linz and Salzburg.
So we are in a "strategic brewing center" in central Europe, infact the region Oberösterreich is next to the borders with Bayern region (Germany) and region Bohemia (Czech Republic).
First news about this castle are very old (X century),
many noble families lived here and, for a short period, it has been also a monastery.
In 1681 this building became a brewery with its production and commercialization.
Since 1803 this castle-brewery has been the property of Stohr family till now.
Currently this brewery offers a lot different beers, and among these, SAMICHLAUS is the most famous one.
SAMICHLAUS is the strongest lager in the world (it is written on its label). The strongest "alcoholing talking" cause of its Abv 14%.
Today instead we're gonna taste this beer....Doppelbock Dunkel....which is, alcoholic talking, is strong as well....infact it's Abv is 8,5%.
So, also today we have a doppelbock dunkel, that's why i suggest you to drink it not too cold.....i'd say around 10°C...maybe a little more.
Let's open it..
We have a classic 33cl bottle and the most suitable glass for this type of beer is a "tulip glass".
Head is dense but not not persisting, and the colour is dark brown with amber reflex.
Let's smell it.
Aroma is a typical dark bock aroma
..toasted malt...toffee....coffee...a little bit of dark chocolate...
....also a light smell of fruit.....dark fruit...red fruit..
I can feel a bit of alcohol too.....let's consider that Abv is quite high...so it should be natural to feel it too.
Let's taste now....cheers!
Medium body.....but it is very smooth in mouth....
It is not too much carbonated...so it's easier to feel the toffee sweetness.
Let's say that also taste is very similar to its flavour and aroma (all features i said earlier)
About the perception of alcohol.....well, i was "afraid" to feel it much more than i thought...especially considering high ABV (for a doppelbock)...instead it's not that strong...
The only place where i'm feeling clearly the alcohol, is in throat.....infact it's warm....it's warming my throat :)
Finish is tendentially bitter contrasting the sweetness of toffee......but it's also dry....: as well as aftertaste, which is bitter too even if not too persistent.
As beer warms up a bit, i can feel also liquorice....which is another common feature of this type of beer.
Eggenberg Doppelbock Dunkel is a great example of doppelbock beers.
One of distinguishing feature of it is its high ABV, which by the way is not too excessive while drinking it.
Anyway it is a complex beer, and it is curious to know that it's fermentation and maturation is 6 months long in cellars of Schloss Eggenberg.
This beer won also Silver Medal in Beer World Cup 2007.
Talking about food, i suggest to drink it with seasoned cheese....meat....something "heavy" and savory...considering high ABV (i remind you once again...8,5%).
In 2007 this beer won silver medal in world beer cup, that means that it was and it is still considered an excellent model especially among doppelbock beers.
Well....i think i said all i wanted.....thank you very much to join me
...so i wish you all a nice time......cheers and see you for next beer!
