>>ANCHOR: A major announcement at RIT today. The future of the women's hockey program is
about to change. Here's Ashley Zilka. >>REPORTER: After winning the division III
championship, the women's hockey team at RIT plans to move to division I beginning next
season. The tigers will join College Hockey America. Syracuse University, Mercherst College,
and Robert Morris University, are a part of CHA. Penn State and Lindonwood University
are set to join the league this year Girls on the team say that hockey is a huge part
of RIT, it's only fitting for them to move their program to Division I. Usually teams
making the transition do not play a full league schedule for the first two years but today
the girls got a surprise. >>PLAYER: We didn't even know if we that could
be in playoffs kinda thing so that was like a big shock to us and I guess that like looking
forward to that being able to actual try to win something.
>>COACH SCOTT McDONALD: I know it's a lifelong dream to be a national champion and I know
growing up they all wanted to play Division I but they saw the value in RIT education,
they chose here and I think the proof was on the ice how strong these fine young ladies
are. >>REPORTER: The NCAA will make it official
with their vote coming this summer. In Rochester, Ashley Zilka with News 8.
