CULTURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP Relationship between artist and cultural manager
One of the challenges of management lies in the relation between the management model
and the artistic proposal which gives strength and singularity to a certain project.
The first step is honesty: in any kind of human relationship,
and more if it is a professional or an artistic relationship, you must be honest.
Each one should know which is his role.
I think that we are going more and more on the right path,
and I think cultural managers have more and more sensibility
because we noticed that we need to boost it if we have it,
or we need to look for it to boost it.
One of the essential elements of this relationship is the respect
of the cultural manager for the artistic creation.
This respect means that the cultural manager has to understand and interpret
how the creator decides his proposal.
Sometimes there are artists who you have to put in their place and
who you must tell that their project does not have any purpose and is getting nowhere.
Being artist does not mean your project is good.
I think that it is really important that the artist is confident that
those who are professionals of management, are really professional in their work.
It does not happen with cinema. In cinema, the producer is the producer.
And if the producer changes how to do something, the director can defend his idea,
but at the end they reach an agreement,
in which, in the majority of cases, the wit of the creation is not lost.
Common sense should lead to the creation.
Call it sustainability or call it whatever you like.
And artists have realized that without management their creations stay in a box.
So I think that each one is assuming more and more his role
in a natural way, that is, without giving any prior detail,
obviously one is an artist and the other is not, therefore, both should join efforts.
There might be cases of artists who are not easily managed,
because maybe for them the manager is such a grey figure,
and there might be cases of managers who do not have sensibility, but there are less and less.
It is good to keep the artistic liberty and lend it more weight,
and it is important that the manager is in love with the work of the artist for who he works.
I think this is very important, that there is an infatuation in relation with the work,
but at the same time his work is to give it rationality.
And this is possible when there is mutual respect.
