Could you say something on what it was actually like to work with River Phoenix?
What was like as an actor, how did he work with the director?
We had quite a long preparation, because there was between the acceptance of
the film and the making of the film, I don't know, maybe four months in between,
maybe five, I don't remember exactly and in that period
I saw him quite a lot, to get to know him and him to know me,
It's a dialogue, it's not a one way situation.
You know we became kind of friends I would say,
even if I was quite older than he was. I must say I asked him once a question and
he gave me quite an interesting answer for a young man of twenty two
when I said "What do you think of working with an old
director? You're very young still, and I'm , you know, quite old."
And he said "Sir, no problem. You have more experience than I have, so I'm delighted."
Very, very interesting reply from a twenty two year old.
Stop that, Harry won't like it.
You're all alone out here, an attractive woman comes along
fluttering her eye lashes. Don't get too excited.
Through the scenes which are missing, I give you one scene which I miss very much --
it's when they meet in the beginning, when she comes up to see and he's there,
she has a wound on her foot. Now I say something because we don't have
the scene, which is an interior scene, therefore to be shot later. When he takes
care of the foot. That scene, I had really well in my head how.
And it was THE big love scene of the film. She comes there, she's exhausted and she has
a wound and he takes care of the wound and you'd say
"God! Can only do a man who has sensibility and gentleness,
with an unknown woman to be loving."
So if you were to ask me -- my love scene
was a foot scene -- not shot unfortunately but I was not interested
in what everybody today is interested showing, which we've seen a thousand times and we know
exactly -- we know the end -- it's not very suspenseful -- because it
all ends the same way - "huh huh huh! Uh!"
Everything is a smart *** joke with you! That's what you've been aiming for isn't it!?
No it is not!
I'll kill you!
Come with me.
Jonathan Pryce did not want to see the film because he was so fond of River
that he couldn't stand the idea of seeing him on film.
On the film that he worked with. I convinced him to go to Berlin
when the film was shown and finally he came and he was very happy afterwards.
