Anime even being as enjoyable as it is
One of its Fault is the cliché, bland main character mostly seen in harem, slice of life love comedies
Those type of characters are so oblivious to the world around them
that they don't even see that every female in the series is after there ***
and even after being chased by
tsunderes
kuuderes
yandares
and ever deres there are
they still think that they are an average high schooler
Tell me if you know someone who has harem of girls *** after him
but is too embarrassed to even hold a *** hand
if I was the main character of a harem anime
I would *** every chick I could lay my hands on
and then I would be brutally stabbed to death by one of those chicks
So with all that said
the only reason I checked out this anime was because of a funny meme I saw of this anime on some random site
and while I was reading the synopses
I could tell that it was going to be something like boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai
a guy with no friends who somehow joins a club then some episodes later
he has a *** harem
But even so I gave it a try hoping it would be entertaining enough to pass my time
the first episode starts with a monologue of our main character, the first line he says
As usual, being a love comedy means that there are no death God with giant sword
hyperactive ninjas
Mr. Fantastic pirates
nor retarded titans
It’s a simple concept of an anti-social guy joining a club
The majority of the series follows our main character Hikigaya Hachiman
trying to solve the problems of others while discovering the personalities of people around him
The series is separated into different arcs each dedicated to helping out different peoples
that’s pretty much it
without mentioning the usual tropes like the pool or rather river episode
the summer camp
the school festival
and the fireworks display
Now for the part that really makes it stand out from the others, its characters
First we have Hikigaya Hachiman, one of the best protagonist I have ever seen in a love comedy
He has a dark past of being rejected by the people around him
and because of that he becomes a loner and plans to stay that way in the future
even his goal is to became a full time stay at home husband
The thing I really like about hikigaya is his twisted view on life
he doesn’t try to sugar coat on anything says them out plainly and simply
he knows how the world looks at him and reacts accordingly
like in gym class when the teacher says to pair up with another student
instead of awkwardly trying to convince someone to be his partner
he simply tells the teacher that he rather practice alone
And because of his loner personality the choices he makes are even more interesting
it may not be the one that will make the problems disappear
or everything the way it was but still it gets the wanted result
and that makes hijigaya the best character of this series.
After Hikigaya, we have the first of the 2 main female leads
Yukinoshita Yukino
She is the opposite of hikigaya in a strange way
Unlike hikigaya who has rejected the world because they rejected him
Yukinoshita is beautiful, smart, and come from a great family
but the problem is that she has smart tongue
in a real life scenario she is what you call a ***
And because of her bitchness she is tends to isolate herself
Even with all her faults, as the series goes on
we get to learn more about her family and her lifestyle
as well as how she finds a friend in our next character
Yuigahama Yui
the ditzy orange head girl that represents your average teenager
She might not be beautiful as Yukinoshita
but she tries to fit in with the other students and makes an effort to stay friends with everyone
she is clumsy, stupid and she will hide her weakness even if she has to lie
but that is what gives her character a realist deep and a sense of reality
Besides these, there are other side characters like
The fatty
The trap
The sister
The girl that should end up with the main character
The stupid blonde ***
The guy with the perfect hair
The three duchebags that follow the guy with the perfect hair
The sliver twins
The bullies
The one being bullied
last but not the least the PERVERTED GIRL
The comedy is made up of mostly sarcasm with the conversation between hikigaya and Yukinoshita being the most enjoyable
there is some physically comedy but nothing too exaggerated
the Fanservice is rather limited for this being a love comedy
there are no over the top *** shot nor anything defying the laws of physics
The story of Oregaiaru suffers a lot from pacing
some parts being slower than my Internet connection
while some where I couldn't even lift my eyes from the bottom of the screen
The animation was done by studio brain base who also did spice and Wolf
and is average for an anime of 2013
but merit to the character design, each fits the characters perfectly
Sound is OK with nothing outstanding, I did like the opening though
Overall what drives the series is its characters
there interaction with one another and the choices they make
It naturally portraits a normal high school life that everyone will find something to relate with
It takes a light hearted approach to the downside of high school life and it's rules
The pecking order, the bullying, family restrictions, the screwed up decision we make and the consequences of those decisions
it handles all of this without blowing it up to unrealistic proportion
nor does it make it so dark that you'll be sitting there laughing at the pitiful or awkward situation
This anime filled the void that welcome to the NHK couldn’t, an unpopular loner in a high school setting
Looking back, I found it most relatable to my own high school life
Not being popular
wanting to be left alone
regretting past failures
thinking the world as disgusting place
and all this through the eyes of another
This anime gave me nostalgia of how I was back then and also made admire how they did things, I couldn’t
For the final rating I will classify them into two
1 being the general and other being the personal which may include everything from nostalgia to fetishes
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING
