>> [Background conversation and music] Co-op is more than just class,
it's an experience Be the change I am a Bronco volunteer.
The Center for Community Engagement at Cal Poly Pomona offers a
variety of opportunities for students. From volunteering your time at
a local non-profit to enrolling in service-learning or finding an
internship with a company or business, there's a program that best
suits you.[ Music ]>> [Background music] Well, you could say I was a
typical student. I went to class. I went to club meetings, went home.
But to be honest, that was boring and I decided to do something about
that. Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people and try
new things. I am a Bronco volunteer because I want to do
more than what's expected. I want to do -- I want to challenge myself
so that way I can grow and together with the community, when we
challenge ourselves we can grow and achieve anything.

>> [Background music] I'm very enthused about service learning and I
include it in a number of my classes for a couple of reasons. One
reason is that as a faculty member, I have to stay current and going
to the library to read up on what is current is not very fun. By
becoming involved with people working in actual communities where the
current thing is the problem that's facing them that day, or the
solution that they're trying to implement is a much better way
for me to stay current, and that way it's satisfying. It's also
satisfying from a pedagogical standpoint, because I think it is a more
effective way for many students to learn and of course, to see
students learning more and learning better it's very satisfying to me
too Cal Poly Pomona students have had a big impact in the city of
Pomona, in terms of, their service-learning work they've done with the
city's Public Works Department over the last year and a half. And
we've had them do some work that was valuable work that we frankly at
the time couldn't afford, but was work that was necessary, and we saw
it as a way to utilize the skills that they have and
are developing as students The partnership that we have with the
Cal Poly Service Learning Group will have some long term benefits for
the city of Pomona residents, because the services that the Public
Works Department provides are essential to mobility and
waste management and water supply and how we manage storm water. So to
the extent that the projects they worked on, have had an impact on the
ultimate projects we're going to build and services we'll deliver. I
can foresee a time when many of the projects that we roll out as the
city of Pomona would have had some imprint from the students of Cal
Poly Pomona.[ Music ]>> [Background music] My job at AQMD is
because of co-op. Co-op is more than just a class. It's an
experience. The philosophy at Cal Poly Pomona,'Learn by Doing' is
really heavily applied here, with our co-op, because just
alone working here it can be is the proof of it. I can confidently say
to any employer that I have a lot of background knowledge and the
experience because of co-op. If anyone's reluctant to join co-op I
would say, "Don't be and just try it because you have nothing to
lose. In the end you will have the edge than anyone else because you
