Jessica: If we make the best products out there,
in the beginning we may not be the most profitable company
but we're willing to take that risk
because we feel like every child deserves a better chance at life.
(bouncy music)
Voiceover: They artists, innovators and media pioneers.
Famous names that are challenging the status quo.
This is Acting Disruptive.
(upbeat music)
Max: Jessica.
Jessica: Hello, how are you?
Max: I'm good, it's good to see you.
Jessica: You, too.
Max: This place is amazing.
Jessica: Thank you.
Max: So, what is The Honest Company?
Jessica: What is The Honest Company?
(lively bouncy music)
Jessica: We are a family brand.
We make everything from detergents to clean your home,
to personal care products like shampoo, conditioner to diapers and wipes.
Max: What is this place, a jungle gym?
Jessica: Yes, this is our play area.
We do put in long hours here.
We are a start up and so it's nice to be able to sneak away
for 15 or 20 minutes and play with your kids.
Max: Now, innovation isn't usually the first thing
that pops into people's minds when they think diapers,
but it is a major focus for you guys.
Jessica: Or consumer products.
Jessica: When you all of a sudden become responsible
for keeping a little person alive,
I think your mindfulness about the world just completely shifts
and I looked at the options that were available
and really you could have very eco products that didn't really work
and were ugly and expensive,
or you could have effective products that might burn your baby's bum.
Max: That's really at that point,
you've decided to disrupt sort of the baby industry?
Jessica: Basically I started this company out of a need
that I felt wasn't being met.
You can have superior ingredients and superior products
as far as effectiveness goes
and they can be cute and they can be affordable.
We also have like a social aspect to our company
that I feel like is really important.
I don't buy one thing without doing my research
and watching a video and reading blogs about it
and how effective is it?
Does it really work?
They use to say it takes a village to raise a child
and the internet is the new village.
Max: It's important for your products to be cute.
Jessica: Yes.
Max: Are you the soul arbiter of cute
or do you have like a focus group
or how does it work?
How do you decide what's cute, what's not?
Jessica: Certainly, with our diaper designs,
that's something that we always have to do.
We always have to stay kind of ahead of the curve
when it comes to like fashion forward.
I'd love your opinion.
Do you want to come help me pick out some diaper designs?
Max: Yeah.
Jessica: Cool, let's go.
This is our top secret product room.
Hi guys!
Guy in white: Hey!
Jessica: I was showing Max around the office
and we were talking about picking out diaper designs.
Max: I kind of like plaid, like a plaid guy myself.
Which is your favorite?
Jessica: I'm really liking these two together
but then is it too soft and baby?
Like this might be a little more graphic and cooler.
I also wanted to show you our diaper cakes.
Max: Yeah, I've been hearing about these things, diaper cakes.
What are they?
Jessica: I had this harebrain idea of what's the ultimate baby shower gift?
What do I want as a parent?
And it obviously needs to be cute but I also wanted it to be functional.
So, I came up with this idea of diaper cakes.
Max: It's perfect.
It's like an all in one starter kit for moms.
Jessica: Yes, exactly.
Jessica: Why not end it on a high note?
Max: Exactly.
Jessica: All right, let's go.
