The following is a presentation of HBO Sports.
Hello, I'm Jim Lampley.
will take you live
the Pay-Per-View showdown
and Juan Manuel Marquez.
we're going to take a look back
last appearance in the ring.
last year, also in Las Vegas.
in his now epic rivalry
a fight made material
the extremely close,
in Pacquiao's favor,
in their third fight.
to fight a fourth time,
than ever, coming off
to Timothy Bradley
during the summer.
as they met for the fourth time
I called the the fight,
and Larry Merchant.
REFEREE: ...will have both sides.
Anything thrown up here will be considered a clean punch.
Now, gentlemen, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
I want you to keep this fight clean at all times,
protect yourself at all times, and what I say you must obey.
Good luck. Touch 'em up. Buena suerte.
MERCHANT: They've had 3 very good fights.
Is this too much of a good thing,
or is too much of a good thing a good thing?
Let the thing finally begin.
LAMPLEY: Kenny Bayless trying to push Pacquiao back.
He wants to come out of his corner to the center of the ring.
Is it Round 1 or Round 37?
a straight left hand, 5-2 jab.
has landed yet.
[Crowd chanting "Marquez"]
lands for Pacquiao,
lands for Marquez.
trademark punches.
see Manny Pacquiao trying to use more head movement,
Marquez's counter shots.
starting out quicker than he started before,
he's giving feints, trying to freeze him
freeze him, he can hit him
left hand that he throws.
like Pacquiao
in his belly?
the fire in his fists still?
throwing some good body shots early as well.
down there twice this round.
A good hit.
over the top, landed on the button.
Pacquiao with a right.
the right hand,
after Pacquiao threw the left over the top.
Manny said would be different,
Marquez's counters by moving his head.
definitely moving his head more.
Unquestionably. Even before he punches.
and will it work?
Those are the questions.
it up because I think
prepared to do this time that's different
because in the first fight,
of head movements.
to drop Marquez so many times...
with the feints.
Marquez with a left hook.
like their first fight.
back and forth.
[Crowd chanting "Marquez"]
It's a Marquez crowd.
during the introductions,
"Marquez, Marquez, Marquez."
to Pacquiao's body again.
by Pacquiao inside.
a good uppercut inside, too.
[Clapper]
to see what Pacquiao is bringing
not doing much leading,
more punches this round.
is the difference, it appeared
the advantage in Round 1.
[Man speaking Spanish]
Bring his cup down.
Jab a little bit more.
Be alive.
He's trying to catch you with the left.
times, 2 or 3 lefts.
[Man speaking foreign language]
[Whistle blows]
in a high-profile,
like this,
only one man can win.
Mitt Romney can testify to that.
JONES: Ha ha ha! He's in the front row,
Pacquaio's corner...
as you saw.
Here's Round 2.
the first one to Pacquaio.
Pacquaio 13 of 56
Marquez only 5 of 32.
in the round.
that he's demonstrated
with Marquez.
most opponents,
1/3 jabs.
2/3 jabs, 1/3 power.
Marquez's counter shots.
Yes, always.
he fights Pacquaio, and the one thing
may not necessarily agree with,
the one characteristic
Pacquaio such a hard time.
than Pacquaio.
a professor of boxing,
against a fighter
offensive fighter.
by Marquez
a left upstairs.
of Joe Frazier about Jimmy Ellis:
smart fighter.
in there.
I'm hitting him."
Ha ha ha ha!
happening right now--
Backs Marquez up.
shot by Pacquaio.
early with his left hand,
countered back
of those two shots.
Jim, is what is allowing him to land those shots.
Marquez from throwing.
to the fight at ringside.
early in his career set up his offense.
trying to do tonight.
at him, and it enabled him
to them than they expected him to be.
this up all night, it's a new wrinkle.
Yes, Larry?
he has to find a grain
for him to win over the judges.
agreeing less.
relatively little,
a measured way of dealing
pressure
putting on him.
a good left hook.
Several seconds to go.
from the right hand.
by Marquez, actually.
by Marquez here.
REFEREE: Time!
[Man speaking Spanish]
the right hand and the hook.
Vaseline.
Breathe deeply.
Keep it that way.
Keep the footwork going.
Very good defense.
what I'm talking about in the first place.
followed by the one-two,
lands cleanly.
holds him still,
in with the one-two
with the left.
at ringside,
as always.
in Round 2: Pacquiao 12 of 41,
Pacquiao with a 9-6 edge
according to CompuBox.
You know, a couple of the left hands
has absorbed were the kind of punches
the first fight that
knocked him down.
to take that left hand now
through.
less power, as some people have speculated.
Right.
for Pacquiao on the chin,
the body with the left hand.
very motivated here, I must say, Jim.
enjoying himself,
on the attack.
with all that movement:
upper-body movement, keeping his feet going.
to fight;
through very well
for the first 2 1/2 rounds.
down the pike lands
Marquez again
as he goes by.
out of the game.
and Marquez stays still.
of feinting, he comes
right there.
as stationary a target
as has been the case in the past.
a smart choice and goes
with the left hook.
Very smart choice.
by Marquez.
to go if Pacquiao keeps all this movement up.
to slow it down.
Ohh! Hard right hand by Marquez!
in 4 fights,
has been knocked down!
in 39 rounds
has been able to put Manny Pacquiao down,
his signature right hand over the top.
the looper punch--
the weightlifting would definitely benefit.
with that right hand as well.
a two-point round
Pacquiao can retaliate?
measuring Pacquiao.
aggressive fighter,
he measured him for the right hand.
by Marquez.
the defensive now.
to throw again.
defensive for long.
You ought to know that.
the left hook by Marquez
over the top.
just like Pacquiao was using the feint
the body shot to hold Pacquiao still.
[Crowd chanting]
[Clapper]
at the end of Round 3.
down by Juan Manuel Marquez.
but Marquez makes the points stand up.
MAN: Move it right here.
All right.
caught pulling away, OK?
pull away, all right?
You got to go under it.
feint down after the jab,
to the body again,
over the top with the overhand right
or the straight right to the body.
as clean as he's ever gonna catch him.
truly dramatic statement
has made
with Pacquiao.
in the round
colossal right-hand shot.
have it through 3?
LEDERMAN: I'll get you.
on a point system, and in points,
evened it up with that knockdown.
in that round,
it's 28-28.
the first two rounds.
the cleaner shots,
with that right hand in Round 3.
So 28-28; it's all even.
the same score.
Marquez wobbled Pacquiao
of their second fight.
as he had come prior
Pacquiao down.
turning point.
fighters respond to it.
they're wondering
helped him at all.
There was your answer.
like this in one punch.
by Marquez finds the target.
and a left hand.
physically recovered from the knockdown.
recovered?
physically and psychologically recovered
he got knocked down in.
his first rodeo.
[Jones and Lampley chuckle]
some really, really good head movements.
a little bit older.
slowed just a tiny bit.
a more wide-open,
than ever before.
their version of "The Thrilla in Manila."
Ha ha ha ha!
by Pacquiao.
by Pacquiao.
Pacquiao.
landed before that.
been trying several uppercuts.
they saw
might be open.
'cause it's a signature punch for Marquez.
uppercut-throwers in the game.
That's what I was just about to say.
always--remember, in Fight 3,
try it against him?
[Clapper]
good right hook by Pacquiao.
right hit by Pacquiao.
Great right hand by Marquez.
They trade shots again.
[Bell clangs]
High-action round.
[Men speaking foreign language]
On the legs, on the legs.
Now, you needed room.
We can't get it.
more combinations.
Manny, all right?
MAN: The legs, the legs!
[Man speaking Spanish] INTERPRETER: Got to attack.
'cause you're doing-- attack a little bit more.
combinations and then...
[Whistle blows]
If you'll notice, in Pacquiao's corner,
his calves.
in fights before.
ringside tonight.
You saw Ray Leonard.
14 of 37 punches
in the fourth round.
7 of 35;
in power shots.
Harold Lederman scored the round for Pacquiao,
in front by a point
unofficial scorecard.
first 4 rounds.
Pacquiao's movement,
in the third round.
Pacquiao hit Marquez with a fresh left hand,
scarcely blinked.
JONES: Ha ha ha ha!
very focused, Larry.
coming, whereas, in earlier fights,
by punches he probably didn't see.
be careful, though,
Pacquiao is sitting down on his punches
him some feints, and Marquez--right there.
the knockdown!
the knockdown count
on the canvas--
to touch his glove
the knockdown in Round 5.
tries to retaliate down the stretch of this round.
so many left hands
Manny Pacquiao.
respecting the feints,
Pacquiao caught--ohh!
Huge right hand by Marquez!
to stand up!
the best fight yet.
a bloodcurdling war so far.
promised toe to toe,
that story before, and seldom
try it at this level of the game.
a different brand of toe to toe.
toe to toe.
Ha ha ha ha!
Like that.
and we bangin'.
by Pacquiao.
hurt Marquez.
after knocking Marquez down.
of the round without Marquez being able to retaliate.
Marquez is hurt bad. That right hand.
Marquez's feet are wobbling!
Pacquiao attacks!
He might think he has him.
is hurt bad.
as Pacquiao plows him into the corner.
And Marquez won't hold.
Marquez hasn't been stopped yet.
Marquez still wobbly,
fighting almost as though he's injured a leg.
But he is fighting back.
Boy, 5 years ago, we didn't know
that Marquez had that in him,
but he is fighting back
from some really killer shots.
What a round! What a round!
[Bell rings]
They're at war in Vegas!
Pacquiao evened up the knockdown count!
[Men speaking Spanish]
MAN: Nothing. It's a little cut.
Juan, how you feeling?
MARQUEZ: Yeah, I feel good.
[Speaks Spanish]
That, just like that.
Get close to him and go for it.
[Man speaking Spanish]
Yeah, and these combinations, you got to move your head.
You got to move your head!
JONES: Here you see Pacquiao laying a straight left
right down the pike, and down goes Marquez.
Where his gloves touch, well, that's considered a knockdown.
There, that's that straight left hand again, and down goes Marquez.
You see the gloves touch the floor right there.
That's cleanly a knockdown.
Later in the fight, you see a left hand followed by a right hook.
What you said is what eludes this time,
and that right hook really hurt Marquez,
maybe worse than the left hand did.
Sergio Martinez at ringside.
Manny Pacquiao's right hook re-emerges
from dormancy in this rivalry.
Sometimes it's his most effective punch,
but everybody game-plans for the straight left.
Pacquiao in that round-- 26 out of 48 punches,
including 21 power shots.
Marquez was just trying to stay in there.
[Crowd chanting "Marquez"]
Sixth round of a scheduled 12.
It's going by fast, and it's been brilliant stuff.
Wouldn't surprise me if Marquez's nose is broken.
There's a lot of blood coming from it.
He was stiff-legged all the way to the end of the round
after that big right hook, but managed to stay on his feet.
I don't know how he finished.
Looks as though Marquez's nose is broken.
The blood is gathering under his nose.
And his left eye is swollen.
These are big shots Pacquiao's been landing early.
And there's another left hand, and another left hand!
And Marquez drives him back with a counter shot.
And once again, the drama king
has created more drama,
brought us the blood of drama,
and brought out the battler--
Marquez's mouthpiece is out of his mouth.
No, it's not.
No? No, it's something else.
That was something else. OK.
Well, I hope it was some Vaseline. I hope it wasn't a bridge.
It was a big gob of Vaseline.
You're exactly right, Roy.
Another left hand from Pacquiao.
Yeah, Pacquiao's killing Marquez with these head feints.
He's feinting him, feinting him, getting close enough.
If Marquez doesn't move back, he rushes
with the left hand the next time,
then lands right on the button.
Partially blocked that right hand by Marquez.
It was thrown from a long distance.
That was the one that knocked him down earlier.
I don't think that'll happen again
because I think Pacquiao has made the adjustment.
No, but he might knock him down on an uppercut or a left hook.
Yeah, you might, but I doubt it because now
he's allowed Pacquiao to feint him first,
and that's why Pacquiao is landing so many big shots.
What could Marquez do to stop that?
He has to get back in front of Pacquiao.
He needs to either feint or he's going to stay behind.
And it looks a little bit like Marquez
is having trouble breathing because
of the blood in his mouth.
Pacquiao lands another straight left-hand shot and another.
REFEREE: Hands up! No, no, no, no.
Two champions performing like champions.
Yes, sir.
See those movers right there?
That's what's causing Marquez the most trouble
because when Pacquiao does that, Marquez doesn't really realize
how close Pacquiao has gotten to him.
LAMPLEY: Marquez was off-balance again, now gets his feet back
and tries to roar back to nail Pacquiao with a right hand.
Ohh! And that's it! It's another knockdown!
Will he get up?
He's not getting up, Jim! He's not getting up!
No! He's been knocked out!
A sensational right-hand knockout
by a bloodied Juan Manuel Marquez,
and that is the keystone moment of his career!
Manny Pacquiao is still facedown.
And it may mean a fifth fight
between Marquez and Pacquiao.
What a victory for Juan Manuel Marquez,
with blood streaming out of both nostrils and his mouth!
With his legs wobbly from hard left-hand shots from Manny Pacquiao,
he scores a colossal right hand to knock Pacquiao cold.
And we have to ask, will Manny Pacquiao
ever be seen in the ring again?
Correct. Those are your two possibilities--
a fifth fight or a retirement.
What an amazing fight.
What an amazing, stunning knockout performance by Marquez.
JONES: The last few seconds, Pacquiao was coming at him real hard.
He knew Pacquiao was coming.
This is what a guy does to you who had your timing down pat.
Watch Pacquiao as he comes to Marquez.
Marquez steps back when he's coming,
and here comes Marquez following with the overhand right.
Pacquiao gets the right hand.
He knew he was coming.
He just caught his rhythm because that's what has enabled him
to cause Pacquiao so many problems.
That overhand shot, though, the looping shots are what I told
that the weightlifting would help.
Here, you see, this is the looping shot.
So that's the shot--bam, right on the button--
that the weightlifting definitely will help you with.
That's the hardest and most dramatic shot we've seen in the sport
since Sergio Martinez knocked out Paul Williams
on November 20, 2010 in Atlantic City with a very similar shot.
And Martinez is sitting about 8 feet away
from where Pacquiao lies facedown at that moment.
And Pacquiao had no clue that that punch was coming back at him.
That is why counter punchers wait to counter.
That's exactly right.
Let's go to Michael Buffer for the particulars
on the knockout of Manny Pacquiao.
BUFFER: Ladies and gentlemen, from the MGM Grand
of Las Vegas,
this fight comes to an end
at 2:59 of Round Number 5.
The winner, by knockout victory,

Coming into this fight,
he was vulnerable

[Speaking Spanish]
to work those points, but I always said
the rhythm was going to be important.
he came out...
good fight, good fight.
Thank you.
very aggressive.
immediately,
and counter him?"
[Speaking Spanish]
to come out aggressive, so we needed to do
to be more technique.
and then we were able to capitalize on it.
When you knocked him down the first time...
[Interpreter speaking Spanish]
did you say to yourself, "OK,
"this is a different night,
now I am the stronger guy in the ring"?
[Speaking Spanish]
Yes, we knew if we fought it his way,
we knew it was going to be a very difficult fight,
but it wasn't impossible to win.
But you were hurt very badly,
or at least you were bleeding very badly.
Did you sense you had to do something
desperate and dramatic at that point?
[Speaking Spanish]
INTERPRETER: We had to use our technique and our skill,
and it was very important, and we wouldn't allow Manny
to connect as he had usually done.
When you went down from a straight left hand,
did you feel that was "I did something
not right, something ain't happening here"?
[Speaking Spanish]
Yes, it was an error.
He brought my hand down and that was an error,
but after that we corrected it and everything went well.
We asked you before the fight whether you thought all
of your new muscles would make a difference in this fight.
Did the muscles make a difference?
[Speaking Spanish]
No, I don't think so.
We worked strength and we worked speed,
and I think you could see the good results.
Do you want or expect a fifth fight with Manny?
[Speaking Spanish]
We'll relax, we'll talk with the family, and we'll see what comes.
Thank you for a great fight.
Yeah, Arriba, Mexico. Arriba, Mexico.
[Crowd cheering]
Thank you. Thanks, Manny.
Again, again, you are a great fighter.
Thank you. Great fighter.
We love you, Manny.
Thank you, thank you.
Manny...
after you suffered the first knockdown earlier in the fight,
you seemed to be taking control.
Did you get careless?
Did you just think, "Oh, now I have him"?
in that round because I think that I got him,
it's not good.
Because he was so bloodied from your punches,
you felt that that was the time to finish him?
Yes, yes, and so careless for the fight.
But that's part of the fight.
And so you got hit with a punch that you never saw,
and you were out for a long time before you even knew it.
Exactly. I didn't see his punch.
I mean, I'm so overconfident that I thought I had got him.
We have never seen you go down like that
since your career in America,
since you became such a world force.
Take a look here and tell us what you can see.
I assume you have not seen this yet.
Yes, I...
I am--it is because I thought I had got him, but, you know--
So did it surprise you that, despite the fact that you had
knocked him down and despite the fact that he was so bloody,
that he came back at you with such force?
Exactly. He's not-- he's one of these tough boxers
who, um--Marquez is not that easy a fighter to-- easy to beat.
I did my best, but, you know, that's boxing.
That's sports.
Did you get too aggressive in trying to show
that you really did win the earlier fights?
No, I thought I got him in last couple rounds,
and--but I started to--overconfident.
But when I hit these bands, I got hit a strong left hand.
He'*** you before.
Was he stronger when he hit you, or was it just
that he hit you with punches you just never saw coming?
I just didn't see his punches that--I never expect that punches.
I know it's rather soon after you have been knocked out
for the first time in a very, very long time,
but you have another full-time career
back home as a congressman.
Do you want to fight again?
Do you want to fight him again?
Yes, when it's a good fight, you know,
I'm just--I'm just starting to be overconfident
on that fight because I thought I got him.
So you're saying to us that you want to see
a fifth fight with Marquez?
[Chuckles] Well, if...
they give us chance, then we'll fight again.
Thank you. Thank you, sir.
Whoo!
[People speaking Spanish]
It's broken? Not broken?
Looks broken.
Does it always look like this?
