I started studying
shadow puppetry in 1998.
I learned to perform
as well as to make shadow puppets.
Shadow puppetry History
is more than a thousand year old
and it is still present in China.
During a performance,
we hang a lamp over the screen
In older days we didn't have electricity.
I believe that shadow puppetry
won't disappear in the future.
Performing
a historical play is ok
a simple story is also ok
such as "the turtle and crane".
But with Julie, it's performing life,
she takes stories from real life
and brings it to the stage.
and this is very different.
Such as the stories about Miao Batik
and this is also a story.
I like shadow puppetry
and Julie likes it too...
So, together, we cooperate
and learn from each other.
We´re trying to give
traditional shadow puppetry a new style:
to make it express things never seen before
I come from Xinyi in Guizhou
Back home
I had no special interest
for minority cultures traditions.
When I arrived in Beijing,
I had the kind...
of feeling
to be home.
When I started to understand
the Miao, the Buyi, the Yi and the *** people
share common characteristics,
and yet are different,
I was fascinated.
I was reflecting on
why they are still wearing these clothes...
I think the ethnic minorities culture
in Guizhou is something truly profound.
It's like coffee:
when you drink it for the first time,
it is not so easy to accept it...
But once you've got the taste for it,
you trully like it!
I have been in Beijing for so many years
and I am still very much interested in this
