Today, Sally is tackling some...really serious issues.
Sal? That's right, the big questions.
Innie or outie? You know, bellybuttons.
It's an important and interesting question
because if you have an innie, new studies have found
you probably have at least 60-100 or more species
of bacteria, yeast or fungi friends calling your bellybutton home.
Hang on. Don't freak out.
Most of the bacteria hitching a ride on our bodies
are actually doing us a favour,
serving as a defence against harmful parasites and viruses.
It's cool if you think about it.
And everyone has their own unique mix of bacteria.
A recent study of bellybuttons
found one species of bacteria in a person's bellybutton
that had only been found previously living in the soil of Japan.
While another person's bellybutton
was found to be host to several species
usually only found in the ocean!
The researchers chose the bellybutton to collect bacteria from
as it was fairly protected from soap and exposure to ultraviolet rays.
One thing they discovered was that the amount of bellybutton bacteria
varied depending on how well the person washed their navel.
I bet you'll be scrubbing a little longer this evening!
I think so. Well, thanks, Sal!
Here's the question as I wrap my head around that.
