Hi, I'm George Self and this is Velocigram. In today's episode we want to focus a moment
on initial activities for your class. By college policy it is required that every student participate
in class during the first week. And participation is defined very clearly in policy. Participation
in online classes means your student must do one of three things: post to a forum, complete
an exam, or submit an assignment. Now, for online classes probably the simplest thing,
one of the two, either have some kind of test or quiz over the syllabus; that would be completing
an exam. Or, have students post some kind of introduction to an 'About Me' forum; again
that would meet the requirements of an online activity. Whatever you do, please do schedule
something for students for the first week of class. And if students do not participate
then you will have to drop them. Now, let's see what Grace has to say about first week
activities.
Hi everyone. I'm Grace Mah. As an online instructor, one of the things I worry about is whether
or not the student has read the Course Procedure Sheet and understands the requirements of
the class. One of the ways I try to ensure they understand is to require students complete
a Course Procedure Sheet Acceptance Exam as one of the first activities.
When a student logs into one of my classes for the first time they are only able to see
the 'Welcome - Start Here' block with three items. First, they have to open the Course
Procedure Sheet, take the acceptance quiz, and post an introduction in the forum. All
the items must be marked complete before they can see Week 1 material. These activities
serve two purposes, first it ensures my students know what to expect from my course and second
it meets federal participation requirements.
To hide the other sessions I add two activity completion conditions. First, edit the settings
of any session block. Select the 'Restrict access' tab. In the drop down menu of 'Activity
completion condition, I'll select 'Course Procedure Acceptance Exam,' and leave it as
'must be marked complete.' In the second activity completion condition field, I'll select Introduction
Forum and again, leave it as 'must be marked complete,'. I'll save my changes and now,
before students can see the material in Week 1, they have to complete those two activites.
