Rick Burnetto spends Wednesday nights in the classroom teaching Music 135. He’s an accomplished
musician, conductor and educator who’s taught at various universities for 30 years. He arrived
at Columbus State in the fall of 2010. Rick Burnetto, Part-Time Professor: (middle)
With my background in jazz and big band this is my love and it’s the music I like to
do, so it’s certainly a big part of my teaching as well.
Aaron: (on camera) The class is called “Jazz Ensemble” for a reason: when they’re not
practicing in the classroom, they actually perform as a group on stage.
(natural sound from March 11) The inauguration ceremony for Columbus State’s
new president was just one performance date. Blending stage time - with classroom practice
- make this a unique, one-credit course. Michael Milburn, Liberal Arts Major : I played
jazz in high school and I heard about it and it’s just fun. I just do it because I love
it. And it’s not just students. Community members,
staff and faculty are all in the music mix. Bo Riley, Columbus State History Instructor:
When I saw they offered a jazz band, I majored in music for a little while as an undergrad
and haven’t played since then so I was excited to join in.
Burnetto: (late)…From the big band swing numbers to the Latin to rock. So we’re learning
about styles, we’re learning about different levels of reading music and putting it all
together into a performance group. The class is continuous, allowing band members
to sign up each quarter. And that guarantees music will resonate with audiences for years
to come.
