My name is Jeremy Wulff and I'm a synthetic organic chemist at the
University of Victoria. I look for new ways to build molecules, to build
molecular structures,
and the best way to think about that is to imagine playing with lego, and
building up larger structures from little tiny pieces, but having to do it
with all the lights off so that you can't see anything, and using barbecue
tongs to put all of your pieces together. Other projects in my group are
aimed at a few different disease areas right now.
One class of molecule that we're developing is aimed at treating certain
strains of influenza which are resistant to existing treatments.
Another class of molecules that we're making in the lab are directed towards
pancreatic cancer, and a third class ofmolecules
are directed towards prostate cancer.
There's a lot more to be discovered in the realm of synthetic organic
chemistry, just like every other science
there's so much that we don't know how to do yet and we still need to come
up with new and exciting ways to put together structures that will be useful
to people. Whether those are materials structures, making the the next
kind of water resistant jacket
in the materials world, or whether new kinds of cancer drugs.
