There is a ship
sailing oceans
of life
with humankind...
That ship is faith...
The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke:
Then said Jesus to his disciples:
There shall be signs on the sun, on the moon, and on the stars;
on the earth distress of nations,
the sea and the waves roaring.
Men's hearts failing them for fear
of what is becoming of the earth,
for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
Then shall they see the Son of man
coming with power and glory.
Must be here.
First a hen, then noise like a fallen statue.
Look behind the altar and up at the choir.
Hold up the light. The saint is still standing.
Here he is.
Who is he?
This is Felix's basket.
Call the guardian!
And that is Felix's habit.
Where is brother Felix?
Have you killed him and come to mock us? Who are you?
A witness.
Witness to what?
Of the Last Judgement.
What testimony will you bear?
Of your devotion and humility.
All our deeds are inspired by our Lord.
The secret of Felix's death is no secret for Him.
He knows the murderer and shall punish him.
Your ways are inscrutable.
You let Felix die to let us know fear of the war.
You, who want to save our souls, take Felix graciously,
and accept him among Your saints.
May our monastery, where he was looking for shelter, be an earthly refuge.
Save us so that we could see You in Your glory.
Do you deeply believe in God's mercy?
- Do you confess your weakness? - Yes, we do.
As His ways are inscrutable, we part with our brother Felix.
However, he has not died. He is with us.
ls the monk Felix the monk Felix?
Yes, he is.
- Do you humbly confess your weakness? - Yes, we do.
The forester informed us in the morning.
We marked the whole mine field.
The police came because of the...
- ... identification.
At 10:15 they brought here
the victim's son.
The mines are not meant for civilians.
But we cannot put up warning signs. The enemy could read them.
The mine field has been revealed.
The case must be kept confidential.
- We shall move the mine field. - Where to?
Far from here.
To keep the people away.
The house would only remind you of the painful loss of your mother.
But thanks to her devotion she is saved. That is your consolation.
l can see you are expanding.
l asked the Guardian to join me.
Christopher is selling his house.
The house is already sold.
lt is not fair of you.
ln business, never argue with me!
Christopher could have told me.
Well, see you.
lf the monastery were expanding...
Good luck in your new home.
We have never talked about it.
Now we can talk and make a deal.
- Clare! - Nela!
Here you are your dog.
And some apples.
We bought Christopher's house.
lt will be my dowry.
What will you do in such a big house?
You will come to visit.
Stop crying. l shall cry too.
Your heart is filled with hatred.
Your perfection speaks in our conscience.
But offending your servant, Bachnak offended you.
Come in!
Don't close the door.
ln music is the beauty of holiness.
The work makes our feet ache.
Everything we do serves the glory of our Lord.
We are tested by hard times.
The enemy's mine killed our fellow-citizen.
The enemy wants to raise fear and doubts about our victory.
But the explosion brought back
the healing water to our spring
which we bless today.
Our freedom has always been
redeemed at high cost.
Stop clinking!
- Do you want to say cheers? - This is no plum brandy.
l am not sure how to address you now.
Before you acquired the shop and the farm,
you were simply the choirmaster.
You can choose how to call me.
- Choirmaster. - That is just as well.
People say you bought the house in order to hide Jews in it.
Do you want to gossip?
l would like to ask a favour.
At the monastery, we have an organist.
He knows there is a large organ in St. Michael's Church.
lt would be a nice reward for
his modest life to play it.
She was hit somewhere here.
l do not like the Guardian.
Should l have problems because l help other people?
And Nela too!
Why does she want to get married?
Why don't you shout when you are talking to the Guardian?
problem. The Steins will leave and Nela will get married.
My best wishes, Nela.
l know your white gown will be beautiful.
And l won't see you.
l shall run away. lf you can't be there...
And we can have a wedding reception here.
Do l know him? ls he handsome?
Good night. l shall leave it open.
The organ is old, hard to play.
The monks lost their sense for music.
l received divine inspiration.
ln St. Michael's Church there is a big organ.
l asked the choirmaster
to allow you to play there.
You suffered much, and suffering leads us to eternal glory.
Maybe the war is coming here.
May all the faithful have a chance to know
the beauty of holiness spread by your music.
Although you are not a monk, l ask the vow of silence.
You must not speak outside, except for urgent matters.
- l am brother Felix. - l know. Let's go!
This is the entrance and the door up to the gallery.
Here is your key.
Be careful here.
l fell down before.
l was lucky only to hurt my leg.
There are two organs.
Nobody plays this one, and this old piece is enough for me.
Go ahead.
Can't you? Are you scared?
lt's too much, isn't it?
- You did not come yesterday. - l went to see my brother.
They can hide in his backyard. But he was quite reluctant.
- Who is there? - A good organist, l think.
When, then?
l am coming tonight.
- We shall pay you both. - Well, you have got enough.
Once married you will move house.
Once married you will move house.
We must prepare your trousseau,
and furnish the house.
Dry your tears, l know you are sensible.
Don't cry. l should worry, not you.
- We didn't escape the dog. - Let's take him.
No, we might be revealed.
The bed will have a baldachin.
They won't have to do it as we did... under the willow.
You old fool!
You should leave, you're here alone.
l am always alone, even if the place is full.
Mother was also alone.
She would say her prayers, l drink instead.
The only two possibilities in this damned dump!
The ship is our belief in the truth shown by Christ...
lrene!
- On guard! - Guard! Come!
- What is it? - The dog is back.
They will find us.
Better to catch it than to chase it away.
ls he the organist?
- Where to? - To church.
- What for? - To pray.
You are no nun to be there all the time.
lt is nice to go to church. On Sunday mornings.
But you have your duties at home. lt is devotion too.
Or shall we do all the work?
When shall we pray?
What will our son-in-law say
if she says her prayers in bed?
We can leave everything to the nuns.
lt will pass, l know her.
- Morning. - Welcome. What a customer!
- The wine is drunk? - Yes, all of it...
We shall try such a sort after which nothing bad happens.
l shall catch you! You won't escape!
Your interests are worldly only.
All church doors are closed!
- Not all, reverend. - Yes, the gallery gate is open.
l allowed brother Felix to play.
l was the one to give permission!
- Where is the vestry keeper? - l needed him.
Then you step in for him.
Now. ln vain will Felix play
when the church is closed.
Why are you not at home?
l cannot hear you. God exempted me from hearing blasphemy.
Father!
We miss you at home.
Allow me to say a toast.
Our dear honored host.
Your name is that of the martyr St. Catherine
who was tortured and beheaded,
and taken by angels to Mt Sinai.
Now we are also celebrating your modest widow's life
that crowns also your saint namesake with glory.
- Cheers! - Cheers!
The bed is closer than Sinai.
Play, please. l like to listen to you.
You cannot see me, l sit here day after day.
When they locked up the church, l was sitting outside on the stairs.
- lt is late. - Nobody misses me.
l want to show you something.
Who are you?
The organist's daughter.
My father wanted me to show you.
Just have a look.
Bravo! Wonderful!
l would be happy if l could hope Erno will become an artist.
My pupil becomes my master.
They are two then. The boy
and the monk.
lt happens also to you that other people know more.
You'd better have a drink, gentlemen.
Guardian, tell us about the young and mysterious organist.
He is from our monastery.
God gave him the gift to spread the beauty of holines by his music.
Shouldn't the one who wants to spread the beauty of holiness
also have beauty and holiness?
- So he does... - lf our modest faith
is not blessed by the beauty of holiness, is it less?
- Milan, offer them something. - Yes, Mother.
ln our modesty we do not condemn those with the gift from God
to spread the beauty of holiness.
My band must play marches.
- When the trumpet sounds... - To retreat?
Dear guests, we learnt something from the Guardian
about beauty and holiness.
lt was theory. Now we need practice.
l suggest to broaden it now.
l do not think you can. You are not in grace.
We may return in the state of grace.
Drink, you're fallen from grace!
The brother may love to meet those he is to save by his music.
l am the first in need.
Stop! We shall see who wins.
You are a major, don't worry!
The Guardian spoke of you
and we wanted to meet you.
Don't worry about what to play. We are an ignorant audience.
Or are we not worthy of the beauty of holiness?
Well, what's up? Speak or play!
l'll get even with you!
Shame on you! Leave the church!
We are too weak to protect our faith
against pharisees who have done a profitable business out of it.
l hope it will not discourage you.
Do not come here again. l do not want to see anybody.
Sorry? l do not understand.
lt was God's grace that you have been saved here.
Or has pride taken over you and you forgot?
Let me stay in the monastery. l am glad to be here.
Now l am in fear of my life.
l want to be of service like the rest of the monks
and work in the kitchen or the garden.
l am glad to hear that.
But our steps must be guided by conviction, not necessity.
When the war is over, and your life safe,
time will show best...
The gentlemen might have behaved a little unsuitably.
Or was there somebody else?
- The choirmaster's daughter. - What did she want?
Just to listen. She said she felt alone.
You should report everything to me.
You expect much from my music.
People listened to it for ages, and they are no better.
Don't say that!
Doubts lead to blasphemy.
Let us not prefer mind to faith. All the suffering in the world
is but a small part of eternity.
Everything we do is done to deserve the sacrifice of our Saviour.
There is time to stop Felix.
With yourself redeem also others. Do not let them perish.
Your perfection talks to me through my conscience.
l do not want to sacrifice anybody.
Give Felix strength to spread the beauty of holiness.
All you really want is to revenge your hurt vanity.
- Have l saved Felix? - Yes, you have.
- Am l protecting him now? - Yes, you are.
Sorry, there is a war out there.
Everything must be darkened.
The town council think you should not play in the evenings.
You will have to play by day.
Daytime is bright even in war.
l can play in the dark.
Do it in a way that it will not be seen from the outside.
lf we say it is blacked out, it means it is. No light.
Silence, please!
He's coming!
From the ruins of the old world rises up a better world.
lt is logical we mention it when launching the local broadcasting.
Progress in the world
is followed by moral progress of humankind.
A small nation raises to accomplish its historic mission.
Our long-oppressed people have a new mission to fulfill.
To know and wipe out the enemy!
On a global scale now
German weapons and our guns are joined to destroy the enemy.
lt is happening everywhere now.
And so it should be -
within each nation, within towns, villages, families.
Each of us must proceed
to the moral revival of mankind,
and destroy the enemy with no mercy.
Pupils! All classes to school!
Our soldiers with enthusiasm
and guided by our leaders
pull man out of ignorance.
We shall not allow anybody to
disturb this effort.
What' up?
- lt finished out there. - Was there any music?
There should have been a march.
Where did it end?
There was talk about the enemy.
You have not heard the particular conclusion.
***! Damn such technology!
As for the local radio:
Let us follow a uniform course.
The district secretary to speak.
l opened this issue.
Of course, it was after the Mayor's suggestion.
lt harmed the Party and the state
not having had a radio station.
Mister headmaster...
Our school choir can give a concert.
The folk-song is a lighthouse for national consciousness.
lt is our duty to develop the legacy of our fathers.
Brother guardian?
l did not mean to belittle the beauty of holiness.
l am glad about the idea of introducing the radio.
l agree but the broadcasting
must be harmonized with the bells.
The square will be duly changed
and the loudspeakers will be off, when the bells toll.
Father...
Advent is here soon. lt is a time for making atonement.
What about holy mass?
No broadcasting during mass.
lt is the only time when brother Felix can play.
So he can be your substitute on mass.
Such a shame!
A monk kicked them off the gallery!
Your grandchildren will be easier conceived
than educated here.
You should go to the big church.
There are new services.
some beauty of holiness to prevent man from committing so many sins.
My mother was buried in this way.
They will not get me!
Stop crying, Mom.
lt's because of your father.
Nice play, isn't it?
Yes, it is.
He will play so nicely at your wedding.
Who? Brother Felix?
l'll lose everything. Nelly, the mill and the estate...
l have already lost the organ.
Did you have a nice time in church?
There was no singing. Only the organ played.
Where is Mother?
At the seamstress's.
l heard beauty of holiness makes people humble.
Mother needs humility very much.
l sat there for 18 years!
Why are you all against Felix? He is unhappy.
He is probably a Polish
maybe he is in hiding here.
You should help him.
How do you know he is Polish?
You can tell from the way he speaks.
That is one more reason for you
to treat him better than you treated Clare's family.
Where are they now?
You do know he is Polish.
l will play at the wedding!
You did not sit in the corner during mass!
Good evening.
l came for a fitting.
Come in. Nelly will be right back.
The wedding gown is almost ready.
Nice. lt will look even prettier with the veil on.
lt is a nice place you got here.
And it used to be quiet.
Brother Beatus, our gardener.
This alley is his work.
Very nice.
Lots of work?
My only work in 30 years.
My only work in 30 years.
Why should he not?
ln some silent orders monks forget to speak.
What is this about?
Felix does not speak much.
To speak much is a bad habit also in the monastery.
Doesn't brother Felix have to work in the garden too?
Do you want to discuss the rules of our order?
l want to ask you if Felix could
play at my daughter's wedding.
And both of you are invited to the reception.
l don't know it is Advent.
l don't mind that.
The problem is that he is Polish.
What we know about each other may turn us against each other.
You have betrayed the monastery and all of us!
Here comes the time when weakness means betrayal.
ln unity only can a small nation face adversity and danger.
Not only in war but also on the domestic front...
Lord, you have exposed your servant to a difficult trial.
Felix revealed himself
and betrayed this refuge.
He is guilty and he condemned himself.
He came to be a witness of your devotion and humbleness.
He spread the beauty of holiness.
God, do not punish me for doubts
but didn't he spread hatred too?
May l help you?
You must spare your hands.
But these elements will strike down on the nation's unity.
We do not allow any doubts about our victory.
We can learn from the history of our nation:
Our freedom was always redeemed at a bitter cost!
We too are ready to die for our country's freedom!
When they choose their own paths and delight in ugliness,
l shall bring their horrors onto them, because they
did not answer when l called or listened when l spoke.
But they were doing what was evil in my eyes.
So help me God.
So help me God.
- l take thee, Milan
- To my wedded husband
- To have and to hold
- From this day forward
- For better, for worse
- For richer, for poorer
- ln sickness and in health
- To love and to cherish
- Till death us do part
- According to God's ordinance.
ls it your work?
l wish you much luck.
Daddy!
Must they do business even now?
May l have the pleasure?
The Guardian is ours.
He will get some of the beauty of holiness.
Even if he were Polish,
Felix is a monk.
l have not heard about Polish monks in our monasteries.
The Guardian may explain it.
Then he will speak about that beauty of holiness.
We have already had troubles with that.
lf you are scared
l shall do it myself.
You dare not!
Because of the cheeky Polish
we left the church like thieves!
l will be right there.
He needn't come but we must be polite and invite him.
l do not feel like it.
We did our duty.
They're with the police but know nothing.
l could tell you stories...
- What would you say? - Never mind.
ls brother Felix here?
- Not yet. He is at the wedding. - He isn't there.
He must be at the church then.
You made me to serve a wedding ceremony during Advent
but l am not going to the feast.
- Where is the vestry keeper? - He accepted the invitation.
The church is open.
May l have your keys to lock it?
As the organist of St. Michael's l need the keys.
Brother Felix!
You will not escape. l shall catch you in the morning.
Do you believe in God's mercy and confess your weakness?
We do.
Was it God's inscrutable mercy to cause that Felix is not here with us?
lt was.
Was it God's inscrutable mercy to cause that Felix was not brother Felix?
Where is brother Felix?
- How dare you! This is the House of God! - You are hiding murderers!
Get out!
Only with you.
What do you think you are doing?
That will cost you dear!
Victims from among our own ranks - that makes no sense.
He cannot understand, he is overcome by hatred.
He did it on his own.
Sorry we must verify it here.
ls brother Felix at the monastery?
He has not come back since the wedding.
And was he ordained?
Thank you.
You have damned other people and you did not save yourself.
Where is the beauty of holiness?
ls the way to holiness closed for men?
Yes, it is.
They killed Nelly and expelled Felix.
Do they devour each other,
- those who were doing harm to the beauty of holiness?
Am l innocent in the matter?
What will you do if Felix comes back?
The last, l have no more.
At least you will start working now.
Our Saviour comes, let us prepare the way for him.
Our Messiah comes, let us welcome him.
