Hi my name's John. Let's look at 3 structures we can use for one idea and that idea is when
somebody does something in the present not the past, the present, and this thing annoys
you. They often do it, they always do it, and it annoys you. As you probably know, if
somebody does something in general and in the present use the first form or present
simple / indefinite for example this is my friend Jane if I want to tell you a fact in
general she " takes my things" I say "Jane takes my things" "She sometimes takes my things,
she always takes my things" This is just a fact. It's not positive or negative. "Jane
takes my things". But three structures I want to look at now that show to you or to the
listener that I feel angry about this. The first structure it sounds like present continuous
or "be + ing" listen - "Jane is always taking my things." She is always takING my things
Compare the two,,,,,, Fact: "Jane takes my things"
"Jane is ALWAYS taking my things." Also a fact, but I'm annoyed, I'm angry. That's why
I use a different structure. I can say "Jane is always taking.....OR you are always talking,
be quiet, you're always talking. " so note how I stress ALWAYS Jane is always taking
my things. Youre always talking. You students, you're always asking questions. " "Be quiet"
Fact = "You always ask questions" This is a fact, angry = "You're ALWAYS asking questions"
That's the first structure. The second structure is similar but we use the word 'keep', for
example "She keeps taking my things" "you keep asking me questions" "you keep asking
me questions" "its annoying, be quiet" The third structure to talk about an action that
somebody does in general in the present , not the past, but in the present, and that's annoying
for you is a little bit more difficult , it's with 'wish' , so I say about Jane "I wish
Jane wouldn't take my things." I'm annoyed, this make me angry. I wish Jane wouldn't take
my things If I use it with you, I can say "I wish you wouldn't tkae my things" I can
also do this if it's a general action that somebody doesn't do and I'm angry that they
don't do this. So, for example. I can say "Jane never helps me," Here I can use 'wish'
but with 'would'. "Jane never helps me, I wish she would help me." "I wish she would
help me" "You don't listen, you never listen" "I wish you would listen" So these are three
structures we can use to show that we're not happy to our listener about something in the
present that another person does, which is annoying.
