9 Causes for Failing at Managing Your Time at Home
Not Planning for Contingencies Too often our well-thought out plans fall
victim to unforeseen circumstances. Kids get sick, things break, and many other kinds of
"Uh-Oh's." When they happen... as they inevitably will... take the opportunity to shift gears
with your home time management plan instead of coming to a full stop.
There's a lot to be said for flexibility in plans.
When kids are home sick take the time to catch up on housework. If you have to spend time
getting a tire fixed, spend that time catching up on some reading.
I always thought “Woo Hoo!… forced ‘Me Time.’"
Just like with your physical body, practice will help your mind learn to be more and more
flexible. Setting Goals Which Are Too High
If you haven't cleaned house in 7 years, don't think you're going to get it done on Saturday...
you are out of practice and it's probably too much to handle anyway. Instead come up
with an overall goal followed by daily... or weekly... steps to reach it.
Setting Goals Which Are Too Low Conversely, if your goal is to get the house
looking good for company then sweeping probably isn't going to get it. Rather dust one day
and sweep the next (not vice versa)... but don't stop there.
Not Following Through with Plans A point I've made so many times by now that
you could probably fill-in-the-blank for me but it bears repeating… when you create
a plan it's absolutely useless with no follow-through. There's not a whole lot that will derail a
home time management plan more than just not doing anything. We've all said "I'm gonna
do such and such" yet not make a single moment available to accomplish "such and such."
Not Soliciting and/or Accepting Help If your life is a real mess... which is often
what brings people to strive to create a home time management plan to begin with...then
you more than likely need help on the home front. Spouse, roommate, kids, family, and
friends can all help and would probably be more than willing... if asked. Men and children
are famous for not having a clue how... or even that they CAN... be a big help.
Also, sometimes people offer to help and we (stupidly!) turn them down. Only do this if
you really want to fail. Not Recharging Yourself
Another oh-so common thing that will halt you in your tracks is not taking time to recharge
yourself. Many times through the years I've run myself until I literally dropped. I would
have been much more effective stopping half-way through a project and resting... which I eventually
learned to do. Rest and go at it full speed again.
Not Allowing Yourself Time to Work on Goals Here's a big "Duh"! Have you ever known anyone
who said they were going to do something and then planned absolutely no time available
to accomplish said goal? My own hand is raised (literally). A large part of making reachable
goals is to actually be able to spend time working on them. (I successfully resisted
the urge to add another "Duh" here.) Negative Self-Talk
"I'll never get this done" or "I'm no good at this"! Have you ever thought or said something
like these? Your words have power and what you tell yourself
will come true. If what you're telling yourself is negative... well, I'll leave the deducing
to you. Not Giving Yourself Credit for Gains Made
Finally, all too often we make gains at managing our time at home but we fall short of what
we wanted or what we'd planned to do so we experience a letdown which negates the gains
we've made. In other words, we focus on what we didn't
do instead of what we did or what we didn't accomplish instead of what we did accomplish.
By knowing and watching out for these causes for failing at managing your time at home
you can help make sure your efforts are successful. If you found this video helpful then don’t
