Beatriz’s situation has deeply moved Salvadoran society. Her life is at risk if she continues with the pregnancy.
The fetus has also been diagnosed as anencephalic. This is happening in El Salvador, where abortion is criminalized in all circumstances.
Beatriz asks the government of El Salvador to let her live.
My name is Beatriz. I’m twenty two years old,
and I’m from Usulután.
I ask President Mauricio Funes
to help me so that
the court rules [authorising the doctors to] end my pregnancy
I feel bad, because of everything that is happening, because
they don’t want to do it [authorize the termination]
even knowing that the child is not going to survive once it’s born
I think it would be best for them to go ahead,
to save my life
because… it doesn’t make sense to continue with my pregnancy if the baby won’t survive
and I hope that the Court accepts
and that they do what they need to with my life- with me
because I…I want to live
I ask them from the bottom of my heart to do it
the doctors at the hospital have all been very kind to me
and they’re also worried about my chances of survival
They also want to do [the abortion]
but they can’t, because they’re afraid that they will be put in prison
I ask that they’re not imprisoned for what they’re going to do for me
