under the sea under the sea
darling it's better down where it's a hundred million year old sedimentary
rock 1.5 miles below the ocean floor
that's where it's better scientists from the integrated ocean drilling program
have discovered a plethora
bacteria viruses and even fungi living deep in rocks
far far under the surface outlining their findings at the goldschmit
conference
a meeting at more than 4,000 geochemists in Florence Italy
but being so far below does have its drawbacks for starts there aren't many
of you
just a few hundred microbes per teaspoon of rock compared to trillions for surface
bacteria
they also don't get much action it's been calculated that the bacteria
reproduce only once every 10
thousand years the finding begs the questions about just how life manages to
exist in an environment with almost
no energy sources what's even more incredible is that despite being
incredibly slow and
quite rare these microbes could be changing the very
chemistry of the earth over millions of years and may explain some of the levels
of carbon dioxide
thrown out by volcanoes life really does manage to find a way
absolutely anywhere how amazing is that if you like the video please do check
