>> I'm Nigel Draper, I'm at The Open University here in the UK.
>> So Nigel I'm interested in learning a little bit more
about what you think of how a faculty's teaching style
and maybe use of the technology translates into competency
in the teaching environment are they the same things,
do I have to follow the exact same model of all of my peers
or can I do it the way I want to do it?
>> No I think there's an extent
to which you can do it the way you want to do it
but I think you do have to be comfortable in working
within your teaching style, that's clear.
But I think one of the issues that we do have is
where we do have academics who want to reproduce the way
that they've always taught for print and that is something
that we can't do online.
So teaching online there has to be an acceptance
that there is a different way of teaching.
And I think just from people's experience of using the Web
and so on that when they go in they can see
that where things work and where they don't work
so it may not just be in a teaching context
but I think that's what they really need
to be taking onboard.
So take what does work and what doesn't work
when you're teaching online.
And I think it's not about having a lot of content there
on the Web it's about more interactivity,
it's about reducing content compared with delivery
through print and so on.
>> So we're really asking faculty to also think
about changing their perceptions about the teaching
and learning process 'cause now you're introducing a different
kind of learning space for me, much more interactive,
much more engaged, obviously built upon a technology platform
that may be new to me.
>> Yeah, yeah that's absolutely right
and I think it is also recognizing that it's not just
about using text it's
about having all these other different assets
that we can bring into the teaching
which make a much more integrated product
at the end of the day.
>> Ultimately a better learning environment for our students?
>> Yeah, absolutely.
