Hi folks I'm Boris Johnson I'm Mayor of London and I'm very happy to be
giving my full support to Universities Week.
I think people forget that
British universities contribute about £59 billion
to our economy
and sometimes they're not aware of a huge amount
that universities give
to London.
We call ourselves proudly the world capital of universities in the sense
that we've got more top class universities in London than any other city, we've got
more Chinese students studying here than any other city
outside China
and people come to London from Britain and around the world because it's a fantastic
place to study.
Crime coming down over four years to pick a period
entirely at random, thirty percent on the buses ten percent overall they
value that security a fantastic
transport
network
free museums
here in London
more theaters of course than New York and don't forget it rains more in Rome. It's a
great place to study but we should also remember
that it's those universities
that do so much
for our community and I think
this year of the olympics when British universities are going to be hosting
teams that come from other countries, they're gonna be helping
uh... with the sports science
and it's those universities
that are going to be the drivers
of our economy
over the next twenty years and not just crucial to
recovery now
but to the long term health
of the British economy that's why I'm very very happy to support another
wonderful Universities Week.
