You might have heard of an exercise called the spider exercise. There's many, many different
variations on this exercise, but I'm going to show you at least a couple of different
ways of playing the spider exercise. The first thing to do is start off on their sixth string
and you're always going to play a fretted note. So what I'm doing as I'm starting on
the first fret, and basically the task is to move all your fingers except one.
What we're going to do is start with my fourth finger, the pinky, and I'm going to leave
that planted on the sixth string and keep playing the other strings. But I'm still going
to come back and include that note. Let me demonstrate. Then, I'll reverse it. I'll start
with the pinky first. That's one of the common spider exercises.
Now, what this exercise is designed for is to have control in your left hand and to be
able to sync your right hand up with your left hand and gain some finger independence.
So what I would do is I would go through and hold down your pinky as I demonstrated. Then,
try going through and holding down your third finger, holding down your second finger, and
then holding down your first finger going through all your strings in the same manner
that I just did. That will really, really help out.
