Hey everyone, Dave from AmericanMuscle, and today I have the K&N cold air intake kit,
designed to fit the 99-04 Mustang V6. Now this kit fits both the 3.8 and the 3.9L and
from K&N, you’re going to get a high flow reusable filter, surrounded by a heat shield
to help keep out engine heat and exhaust heat making the air cooler and more dense to make
you more power. After it flows through the filter you’re then going to notice the sleek
black plastic tube, that comes with all the accessories and hardware you need for a quick
at home installation. This kit is going to flow a ton more air and with the reusable
filter actually save you money over time. So what we’re going to do today before we
install it, is take our automatic V6 on the dyno, and get some baseline numbers, so when
we install this kit, we can see what sort of performance gains we pick up. Our 2000
automatic V6 made 145 horse power and 170 ft/lbs of torque. Now our stock dyno runs
are out of the way, we’re going to go ahead and uninstall the factory unit and reinstall
the K&N cold air intake kit. It comes with all the supplied hardware you need and should
take us about an hour. Now that our K&N cold air intake kit is installed we’re going
to load up our 93 octane bama performance tune so when we run it back on the dyno again,
we can see what kind of gains we picked up. A custom tune from bama performance adjusts
engine parameters to maximize performance, through optimized air/fuel ratio, spark advance,
enhanced throttle response ,and for automatics, increased shift firmness and adjustable shift
points. Our car produced 155 horse power and 183 ft/lbs of torque with our K&N intake and
our bama tune installed, that’s a gain of 10 horse power, and 15 ft/lbs of torque throughout
our curve. It took us less than an hour with all the supplied couplers and hardware that
K&N supplied to install the new cold air intake kit, the way it mounts under the hood allows
you to hear, and see a lot of benefits from installing the kit. When we re-ran it on the
dyno after we installed it and we used our bama tune, we produced 10 more horse power
and 15 more ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve.
