After a freak accident Friday, a 6-year-old boy was found alive at the bottom of a sinkhole
at the Indiana Dunes.
Private excavating crews dug 11 feet into the sand for nearly three hours before finally
finding the boy, miraculously alive. He was then sent to a Chicago hospital. (Via CBS)

him screaming from under the sand. (Via Chicago Tribune)
They called 911, and first responders were there within 15 minutes. (Via WBND)
While the boy is safe, many details are still unclear. Originally, the boy was reported
to be 8 years old, not 6 — and he was initially reported 30 feet underground.
Also, no one is sure exactly what created the hole, but some speculate a rotted tree
could have been the cause.
The whole thing has the park ranger baffled.
"We honestly don't know exactly what happened.
This is unprecedented at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. We've never had anything like this." (Via

The ranger says the park will be closed until Sunday to make sure it's safe for visitors.
