Ford's Fascinating World of Football
Brought to you by the ALL-NEW FORD TOURNEO CUSTOM
The reason football is a world sport is it’s played virtually everywhere, from the arctic to the Antarctic, it’s played form deserts to the mountains,
and it’s played in virtually every country, including here, the smallest country on Earth, the Vatican.
The Clericus Cup is as big as it gets in the Catholic Realm. It literally is like the World Cup to us.
It’s made up of 16 teams and over 70 countries are represented. Their fans are passionate. 7 00:00:53,050 --> 00:00:55:110 It’s bigger than I ever thought it could be.
This afternoon it’s the local derby; it’s us versus Urbano.
We beat them last time in the Clericus Cup, they’re going to want to get us today. But we’ll come away victorious.
We take our faith into our football
and if you read any of the letters of St Paul they’re very manly and passionate letters about just rising above the challenges and stepping up.
I always read those versus and put them into my shin pads before I go out there.
It just pumps me up. It reminds me to be courageous out there.
SINGING
When I was a kid I had a dream of maybe making it as a professional football player.
But although I was with Blackburn Rovers as a schoolboy, it never worked out for me. I did go on to play semi-professional football
in the Manchester area for about 10 years. And although I’m now old for a soccer player,
I’ve still got enough in me to compete at this level so it’s a lot of fun.
I think it’s refreshing for people to see young men who are studying to be priests who can still play soccer and they love the sport,
because it’s really what unites us. And it’s where our passion lies too.
I’m a central defender. I’m certainly not the John Terry and neither am I the cultured Rio Ferdinand.
I’m somewhere in between, I guess.
Actually competition’s encouraged. We’re human beings after all and it’s human nature to be competitive.
But it’s just what are we fighting for. Of course, on the field we battle out, we do our best, but at the end of the day there’s a greater battle.
And we’re on the same side.
- Well played. 2-2. You guys went two-up and you got a goal, right?
- Yeah, I got a goal - I didn’t even know they played football in Papua New Guinea
- No, our national sport is rugby but there are also some people who play.
