>> Engineers Week is a celebration of engineering
that we do once a year, and the Engineering Student Council
hosts a whole bunch of events throughout the week.
One of the design competitions we're doing this year is 'Build
a Boat Challenge.'
Engineers will have to design a boat out of recyclable materials
and then get in the boat and race it
across the Poly Canyon Village pool to win the prize.
The Society of Women Engineers put on a Miss Engineer Contest,
which featured several rounds: one of Jeopardy,
one of professional attire, one of geek wear,
and one of engineer wear.
This put focus on engineering for women, specifically.
We had an Egg Launch event,
where engineers designed contraptions that we launched
across the Engineering Quad and the egg
that went the farthest distance without breaking won.
This year, we are doing a Engineering Issues event.
We look at different challenges set
up by the National Academy of Engineering.
So we have Lockheed Martin talking about flight simulators
and Cisco talking about the future of web conferencing.
>> So Lockheed Martin likes Cal Poly
because of the Cal Poly learn-by-doing
education process.
The students come out of here having experienced,
actually working on physical items,
dealing with team situations,
which is what aerospace is all about...
you don't...
no one designs an airplane by themselves.
So the teamwork, the hands-on, all those things play
into having the engineer show up, day one,
and being capable of providing value.
