Hi, I'm Dane Goodman.
I'm Director of the Atkinson Gallery here at Santa Barbara City College.
Behind me are posters and announcement cards from exhibitions
that we've done here over the last six years.
I'm in my seventh year here and I think
Santa Barbara City College, and this gallery
is one of the best places a student can be for
a college education, particularly for this Art Department.
My name is Mitch Springer, I am a Gallery Intern
here at the Atkinson Gallery.
This is my first semester of two working for
Dane Goodman who is the curator of the Gallery here.
I basically assist in curating shows,
I get firsthand experience of what
it's like to be a curator.
I also get to curate two of my own shows, once each semester.
The school has a fantastic art department up here, upstairs
and it also allows me to create beautiful art
downstairs in the ceramics department.
So, what I kinda go for in my pottery,
I defnitely look at the horizon
and try to make a very smooth line going from the flip
to the lip, and invoke an emotion, and do
a very abstract glaze to make that form jump out.
So now are in the conference room in Atkinson Gallery
annex gallery space. This is where I have curated my own show.
It's got a beautiful view, sunlight, and is a beautiful
space to hang artwork.
So this show was a huge pleasure of mine to be able to put
together. A great opportunity. I happened to get
very lucky with these amazing artists that are in the show.
I took a look at their work in computer images
and generated a feel for what I wanted to put in the show.
I had them bring these pieces actually for me to see,
and we came in this room together, and figured out
how we were going to hang the show.
I would come up with ideas and sort of run them
by the artists and see how they felt about that.
Given the ceramics, tea bag sculptures, and
whimsical drawings, you can really
really put together a show that looks fantastic together
and you never would have really known it
by looking at those pieces individually.
We're in the Atkinson Gallery, where each year
we do six exhibitions. Three in the fall, and three
in the Spring. The last show of the calendar
year is a student show which is a competition.
Every other year we do a faculty show to
open the school year in the fall.
And then in October we generally do
this competition called Small Images,
which has been going on for 25 years.
It's a very well known competition.
The rest of the shows are shows that I pick
as the Director of the Gallery.
They can be solo exhibitions or they can be
group exhibitions. I've worked with artists from
New York to LA, all over the art region,
it's known as one of the premier galleries of
Central California.
The show on view right now is Daniel Dove,
who is a professor at Cal Poly, San Lois Obispo.
But his works are seen in Los Angeles and New York.
The show has been going on for a month now,
and will close next week, and also
we've done a limited addition print,
done right here at our campus, by our students.
We believe and know that Santa Barbara is a major
Arts Community. The National Endowment of the Arts did a survey
from 1995 to 2005 and studied how many people
wrote down, I think on their census anyway that they were artists.
And it proved that Santa Barbara is not only in the top tens
it's number 9 in America, of arts communities in America.
So we have a built audience for what
we do here in the art department.
And we believe its our obligation to serve that audience
and we're happy to do it.
In our studio department where we're teaching things like drawing,
painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking,
a number of our students go on to very important art schools
in America like the San Francisco Art Institute, the
Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Institute in Chicago,
Otis in L.A., Cal Arts in L.A.
and almost all of them win major scholarships.
One of our students went to CCA of Oakland, the California
College of Arts, and she received a $12,000 scholarship
the first year and the second year.
If you go on their website you can see
her work, she graduated last Spring, but they're
using her work to get the students to come to that school.
So our students do go on and do well at other institutions.
In our Spring student exhibition we have awards that are
given out, scholarships and grants, and they total up to
almost $10,000. That is besides all the awards that are given in
all the categories. So the student show opening is a wonderful
event because all the students are there, their families are there,
it's elbow to elbow, everyone is waiting
for the awards to be given out.
If you want to have your heart sing, come
to the student reception. You will walk away just glowing. 00:06:01:00 It's what this school is all about.
