Hi, it’s Les McGehee of Plays Well With Others, back with you again. This time I have
a friend with me, this is Andy Crouch. Andy Crouch is the manager of the Hideout Theater
in Austin, Texas which is the hub of that great improv community in Austin, Texas. It’s
one of the big ones, in reviewing all the improv communities in the nation, I’d put
it in the top three right up there with Chicago and Los Angeles, with New York right behind
it as a matter of fact. Anyway, I’m very, I’m very proud of our community in Austin,
Texas and Andy is one of reasons that works. If you’re in Austin, Texas you need to go
to the Hideout. Well, he’s going to help me teach you a game skill or two right here
quick. And the first one we’re going to talk about, it’s an old improv game that
involves surprises. It can be done as a monologue or a scene. Andy doesn’t know what I’m
getting ready to describe, but he’s a high mileage improviser and he’ll do fine just
like you will if you try this game. The game is called Hesitation and it’s more of a
skill than a game, but you can play it in a scene or a monologue. For instance, if I
tell the audience, or another player, that they can fill in the blank if I hesitate,
if I pause, then whatever they tell me, I’m going to embrace and use, using the skill
of “Yes, and” you undoubtedly watched loyally in the earlier clip on Improv 101.
