MY DREAM IS OF THERE BEING SOME KIND OF A DOCUMENTARY FILM
ABOUT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN RHODE ISLAND,
WHICH IS RHODE ISLAND PUBLIC TRANSIT--
RIPTA, IN RHODE ISLAND.
AND I SEE IT AS A WAY OF EDUCATING PEOPLE,
ILLUSTRATING KIND OF HOW FABULOUS PUBLIC TRANSIT IS
AS SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE HAVE AT THEIR DISPOSAL.
WHEN I FIRST STARTED USING A WHEELCHAIR--
THAT WAS FIVE YEARS AGO--
WHEN I FIRST STOPPED BEING ABLE TO DRIVE,
I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE END.
I THOUGHT, "OH, I CAN'T USE THE BUS."
AND I STARTED USING THE BUS JUST TO GET TO WORK,
AND I QUICKLY SAW HOW WONDERFUL IT IS
BECAUSE YOU HAVE EVERYBODY IN YOUR COMMUNITY
RIGHT THERE ON THE BUS WITH YOU.
AND SO FOR ME,
I JUST SAW IT AS SOMETHING REALLY VERY SPECIAL.
IT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT WAY FOR PEOPLE TO--
ALL PEOPLE, PERIOD--
TO BE ABLE TO DO THE THINGS THAT THEY NEED TO DO
AND THEY WANT TO DO TO BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY.
- PUBLIC TRANSIT--
TRANSPORTATION FOR ME IS A DAILY NEED,
BECAUSE I RIDE THE BUSES EVERY DAY.
I GO TO MY DOCTOR APPOINTMENT. I GO SHOPPING.
I DON'T DRIVE. I DON'T HAVE NO CAR.
AND WITHOUT RIPTA, I DON'T GO NOWHERE.
- ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO,
I GAVE MY CAR TO MY DAUGHTER BECAUSE OF THIS...
AND TAKING MEDICATION.
I MOVED TO PROVIDENCE FROM LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND,
AND I HAD NO MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION.
SO I FOUND OUT THEY HAVE THE RIDE PROGRAM.
- THEY'RE VERY CARING AS FAR AS PUTTING THE PEOPLE ON
OR WAITING--HAVING EVERYONE WAIT
WHILE THEY PUT THE PEOPLE ON THE BUS
IN THEIR WHEELCHAIRS.
- DO YOU HAVE SOMEBODY IN YOUR FAMILY?
- MY GRANDSON.
HE WAS IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT.
HE'S 25 NOW.
- AND HE USES THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION?
- HE USES THE RIDE PROGRAM.
narrator: AND DO YOU YOURSELF USE THE BUSES?
- EVERY DAY, ALL THE TIME.
THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET AROUND IS ON THE BUSES.
I DON'T HAVE A CAR.
- PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN MY SITUATION
MEANS BEING ABLE TO GET MYSELF BACK AND FORTH TO SCHOOL,
BACK AND FORTH TO WORK,
GET MY SON TO HIS DOCTORS' APPOINTMENTS,
AND DO THE NECESSITIES: GROCERY SHOPPING, LAUNDRY.
I DON'T DRIVE.

La gente se ha ido más a los transportes urbanos,
transportes con tarjeta, que gastar su gasolina.
Ahora vuelven... van a retroceder nuevamente a...
a agarrar sus vehículos
porque bajó la gasolina.
- Entonces... - Una temporada que
en esos carros no cabía la gente;
demasiada gente.
Entonces ahora...
- ¿Tiene que ir en éste?
- Yo creo que sí.

- No me fijé qué dice.

- AND THAT IS HOW YOU GET ONTO A BUS.

narrator: ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I DO SEE AS A PIECE,
BUT NOT AS THE ONLY PIECE OF THIS,
HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THAT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES,
LIKE ME, USING A WHEELCHAIR, CAN GET AROUND.
IT'S GIGANTIC FOR A PERSON TO BE ABLE TO GO--
I LEAVE MY PLACE.
I CAN GET ON A BUS
AND I CAN GO WHEREVER IN THE STATE.
THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL THING.
