The Horticultural Learning Zone in Fedw Hir, Llwydcoed, aims to use the cultivation of
vegetables, herbs and flowers to educate and inspire a wide range of people.
The project is run entirely by volunteers who sell what they have grown at a Farmer’s
Market in Merthyr Tydfil.
Produce is grown organically and there is a great emphasis on recycling, including a
major composting area for all types of green waste generated on site.
The Zone has had a beneficial effect on the individuals taking part, long-term volunteers
now responsible for mentoring roles and passing their skills and knowledge to others.
The Zone provides stability and hope to those in long-term unemployment who have experienced
all the social disadvantages that long-term unemployment brings.
