Everybody has seen a swimmer who just seems to be awesome, they're gifted
talented, whatever you want to call them. They are the swimmers everybody likes to watch
because they seem to just glide through the water without any effort.
Yes, those swimmers probably are a little bit talented
but I guarantee you they have mastered a certain still that gives them that
smooth, long, effortless look
in the water and that's the loose recovery. Now the recovery is the portion
of the stroke where you're not actually generating thrust
it's where you're preparing to take the next stroke
in the water
Generally, that is above the water. In freestyle it's above the water and with
fly
and with the backstroke
The only exception to the rule is breaststroke where the arms stay under
the water. But the recovery above the water needs to be long and loose and
relaxed
Now notice, I did not say slow. Those swimmers that have that look are not
moving their arms slow
they're just relaxed and that gives them that effortless look. So when you're
above the water, you're preparing for the next stroke, you need to be long and loose
and relaxed
and that will help you become a more efficient swimmer because it
will create a long stroke
and it will conserve your energy
