so what does this entail?
So, I teach Genetics and there is a lot of problem solving
it takes class time to do it and so we
actually extended the class time instead of
two fifty minute periods and an additional
90 minute section called the resuscitation section
problems
nevertheless it takes time so
students have
expressed that they like to see problem worked out in the classroom
more than just bringing in a solution
and just showing it to them
so I spoke with IT and
discovered that you have software called Camtasia Studio
which allows one to make a video through a document camera
so I made videos
of myself; my hand
doing problems
working through problems and
there are about 15 of these videos; collectively, there is about 5 to 6 hours
of video and its basically of working through problems
and students have access to these
and they use them
they told me
they like them and
they use them to review before exams Q: So they use them outside of the classroom instead of inside?
A: outside yes, outside the classroom
So it's a study tool more than a lecture or is it more used a a study tool?
or is it more of a study tool
Is the purpose of an outside lecture or a study resource?
it is not a lecture
in a traditional sense but its a lecture in terms of
sometimes in class we do problem solving
okay
and its used as a study guide
yeah
to help them learn how to do the problems
so have you seen an improvement in grades?
well it is hard to know because the students
didn't have the videos
last semester and this one does
now this Fall
there are two other sections of Genetics taught by two separate professors
and they're going to use these videos as well
so it will be hard to see
in terms of grades but at this point we want to see if students
like them, do they find them useful, are they using them
so what would be useful to know is the number of minutes that these videos are being watched
yeah
and are they watched repeatedly
that would be the way to assess if they're working
so knowing how much of the videos they watched is something you would want to do in the future
yeah, i would like to even know that know if possible
yeah for this semster that would be great
Q: so the students like it? A: Well they said they like it
that usually means they like it
Here is an example of it
I don't know if you can hear this. it is pretty noisy in here
so you cannot hear the sound
you can see that this is my hand working through the problem and
sometimes you make a mistake and you can correct it
so students can hear and see the thought process
and i think that is a big help for them
no, i think that is a great idea because i can connect with the students, because i am a student
where I like the professor to go through
step-by-step of a problem so then we're not doing a certain
section in class and then you focus on that but when
you come to the outside work you're like
okay i really know how to do this step but how do i do the second step or third step. so i think it is a great idea
thank you
