with a little TLC.
Let's sit down and talk about it.
I'm thinking about tackling the entryway and the fireplace.
First we are gonna pick the floor before we pick colors.
Hi, Jonathan!
What's it gonna be?
I think the biggest thing that we need here is flooring.
(Jonathan) Flooring is gonna be the most time-consuming part of this renovation.
You want to make sure that you stagger the joints at least a foot.
Keep it nice and spread out, that way it looks more seamless.
(Francis) And I have a great idea about the floor.
Take this floor, and raise it up this wall,
and the whole thing will feel like... [whooshing noise]
That's...bold.
Francis is certain in his style.
A lot of times it's really great,
but sometimes it sucks.
I do like the idea of creating this as a feature wall,
and it would create a little bit more of an intimate space here
for the dining room, but do you think we have time for that?
I'm worried about the scope of what you've already proposed already.
Yeah, but I'm also trying to stay here after the second day,
so that will be my signature.
(Mark) It's becoming a lot more cutthroat.
People are starting to see that we need to stand out as an individual.
So I have to make sure I do the flooring.
The flooring is a big thing-- it's gonna take at least a couple of you guys.
Where's the signature in laying a floor down, though?
I want to see that the work is being done well, and I'm judging you guys on quality.
I'll tackle the kitchen.
Great.
Let's do it.
You can do it, put your back into it.
[exclaims in foreign language]
Tools! That's just a wimpy way.
Let me help you.
It's extremely important for me to stand out today,
because Jonathan still hasn't seen my design style.
Ah, yes!
So I really need to put my stamp on something.
I think we could do something a lot nicer in here, though,
I agree.
The kitchen is really dated.
All the cabinets need to be replaced.
It needs new appliances, backsplash,
and a little bit more countertop space.
I am a welder, so I really kind of want this kitchen
to look a little more industrial.
(Monica) A lot of work to be done.
Okay, so $25,000... in four days.
I'd love to tackle that fireplace,
because I want to really make it more of a focal point.
Okay.
I've started to do a preliminary budget,
Okay.
It's really risky to take on the budget,
because we're in a money crunch, and it's already an issue for us.
I'm pretty excited about the laundry room.
Now, I don't know if we're gonna have it in the budget or not,
but I'd love to put stackables in there.
I know that stackable washer and dryer will utilize the vertical space...
huge, huge importance.
Isn't it more important to actually get new appliances in here?
Just in doing a preliminary budget,
we're already within 80% of our budget.
All right, what are you coming up with?
We were actually talking about the laundry room.
(Drew) Right now, the way the fridge is, it's eating into your laundry area.
That fridge should come into the kitchen space
so that you have more room for that laundry room.
You have three spaces-- I want to make sure
you're bringing some pop to each space.
(Monica) Okay.
And remember, quality-- I don't want to see any cheap finishes.
All right, work hard!
Okay.
My team lost the last challenge, and soon, we're gonna be down to three.
So I'm taking everything into consideration
to figure out who's adding value to my team, and who's the one that should go home.
[tiles smashing]
There you go.
Your kitchen's your biggest investment on your house,
so I take over the role
because I desperately want to be safe from elimination.
(Brett) Well hello there!
I love the open concept.
We need all new appliances in the kitchen.
We're gonna move the stove into the peninsula
and put the refrigerator in its place.
We also need new tile floors,
countertops, and windowpanes,
and we are on a tight budget,
but the majority of that money
should go into the kitchen.
So much stuff.
Oh, wow!
I look at that wall, and I know that stackable washer and dryer
needs to go on the left-hand side and utility sink on the opposite,
and that will open up the space for some countertops and cabinets.
I'm still going to do a tall
but narrow cabinet for storage here.
It just...it's all contingent upon whether or not
I have the side-by-sides or the stackable.
(Brett) I just don't know about pricing right now.
Do I have to assume that I'm just not getting stackables?
Is that what I'm assuming?
I mean, I'm not doing the budget this time around.
Everybody's coming at me, telling me what we need.
I'm trying to stay on track with our budget,
but it's just really tough to give everybody what they want.
I will do the best I can for you.
I absolutely think that stackable washer and dryer
are the only thing that you can do in there to add value,
so this is a huge problem.
Coming up...
It's a tough job.
If I don't finish, this is gonna be my downfall.
Oh, boy.
(Brett) Let's go! Four days!
Watch your back-- okay, thanks.
No.
(Christy) Let me help!
Oh no, you don't-- okay, okay!
We just need you in the laundry room.
I'm excited about doing the laundry room,
because I actually love trying to figure out
how to put great storage into a small space.
I need to get a crowbar.
But I'm just waiting to hear whether we have any money for the stackables,
because that really effects my plan for that space.
[grunts]
Decisions, decisions.
So I'm looking at this living room, and I'm gonna concentrate
on giving the fireplace a nice makeover, something more elegant,
just a mantel shelf,
and then doing some sort of crown molding on the walls.
What if we do the TV here,
and then it can be the dual sofa layout.
Monica has done all of the staging in the past because she's an interior designer.
This is the feature wall here, and there isn't room
to subdivide this and do a whole different staging area here.
Okay.
But this time, I'm taking it on.
It's on you.
It feels more competitive amongst the team.
I know David wants the living room to be his stamp,
but I am a great designer-- it's what I do.
So I'm gonna build a color palette and start painting.
Oh, that's nice that my wall's not straight.
I choose to do the fireplace and the entry because I see something grand there.
Hey--so, this is a fireplace that was done by the Batchelder Tile Company,
Okay.
If we rip this out, we would be losing thousands of dollars.
This is hard,
because I personally do not like the existing fireplace.
Not a good thing, so the hearth--
Okay.
Maybe there's something we can do to reframe it.
But, you know, I'm gonna put my personal stamp on this fireplace by using
reclaimed wood on the walls and new tile for the hearth of the fireplace.
Oh, my God--look at this.
I'm gonna use reclaimed wood, because this existing fireplace
has large ships within the tile, and the wood really
makes me think of, like, an old hull of a ship.
I know.
I need to create something unique,
something that represents Francis the Greek.
[in a sing-song voice] Tra-la-la-la-la-laaa.
(Torche) Francis, let's pick colors, honey.
As a designer, I love bold color,
so I'm going to design this place.
What do you think if I do very wide, horizontal stripes--
flat, semi-gloss, flat, semi-gloss, flat semi-gloss.
Less style-- more mass appeal.
I think Francis lacks in making smart decisions
for selling purposes.
How about pinstripe, like a man's suit.
I want the dining room to be very dark and dramatic,
so I'm going to paint it a very dark color.
We will lay new hardwood floors,
and I decide to create
an oversize piece of art
that will be so wonderful.
Yeah.
I'm very happy today.
These are some serious bolts.
(Brett) So much stuff in here, still.
The table gives us an opportunity for lighting...
Hey, Drew.
So what is going on in here?
I am taking on the laundry room--
I really, really want to put a stackable in there for them
so I can put more storage in.
That would be very efficient with that space, because it's not a very big room.
As a real estate agent, normally a washer/dryer
is considered personal property, not real property, it doesn't come with the house.
Brett is committed to the kitchen, and I'm adamant about the laundry room space.
The important thing is, in that space, is add cabinets.
You need more storage.
By the end of the day tomorrow, I want to see that you guys
are doing the quality work that's actually gonna add value to the house.
The pressure is really on-- right now we're at four
but by the end of the day tomorrow, I gotta give someone the boot.
(Mark) Day 2, let's do it!
Come on, my friend.
Let's get to work!
It's Day 2, and I know I have to fight hard here.
Yep, we're startin' the floor.
I think it's gonna turn out beautiful.
I'm gonna tackle the flooring.
There's no doubt it's gonna be the single
most important element in raising this home's value.
The biggest problem is this big concrete pad
we have in the middle of the floor.
Come on, man.
So, to fix it, that's really gonna be a big part of the budget.
It's gonna be a piece of art.
Awesome.
Right now, we have just our plywood tops on our countertops,
and unfortunately our budget is so tight--
we spent over half of it on flooring alone--
so I need to come up with a creative idea.
I'm gonna take a bold move here and try to go with concrete countertops.
Perfect.
I am going to teach America how to properly paint.
Color has a story.
It creates a mood, an atmosphere.
Beautiful!
So, I'm gonna use a very dark gray with a splash of red in it.
So as you go up, you can engage the abdominals,
and that gives you a great color workout.
I wanna create intimacy, and yet...
still have wow factors.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
who's the prettiest of them all?
Torche! How's your fireplace coming along, babe?
Okay.
I'm upset--the wood's here.
It's not what I ordered.
That's it? I don't like that.
The wood's raw...
so, I have to process this wood.
Yeah, perfect.
I'm gonna use the torch to char the wood,
because I am Torche.
Oh, too much fire.
This tool is used great for makin' it look like reclaimed wood.
Yes!
Torche is taking a long time gluing pieces of wood to a wall--
I don't know that that's gonna add hard dollar value to this house.
You are pretty!
Honey, I'm home!
This looks good-- so how are you fixin' this?
Because this is the first impression of what will be your new floors.
What we originally did is we put some Fix All down to try to feather everything.
(Mark) It was not sticking at all.
Yeah, usually I would just sort of sand it down,
really rough, just give it a rough sand-- it'll help it bond.
When you're laying new floors over top of an old floor,
you've gotta level it out to make sure that the new floor is not gonna creak and rock.
I mean, we'll have to get the floors goin' in pretty quick, though, right?
Um, it's a tough job.
I am concerned with Mark and the floors
because this is a lot of space.
Ooh!
If he drops the ball on anything, this project will not get completed.
I'm really worried right now.
I took on a lot, and if I don't finish...
this is gonna be my downfall.
Oh, boy.
(Mark) Let's do it!
(Torche) Perfect!
(Francis) There is no way by the end of this day I'm going home.
I'm working on an oversized piece of art for the dining room.
My plan is that I'm using all the colors
that we have picked for the house
and two accent colors.
Beautiful.
I'm gonna angle the board and pour paint on that board of wood.
My darling!
I'm doing art!
My darling!
Wow!
How did you pull this off? This is impressive.
Well, I didn't sleep.
Okay.
and the budget's very tight, so we didn't enough for our countertops.
Okay, so what are you doing instead?
Concrete countertops.
That's too...I'm not a big fan of concrete counters just because of the fact
that they are...you have to constantly keep sealing them, and...
Yeah...
I'm really concerned that Jonathan doesn't like the idea of concrete.
But I have to show Jonathan what I can do.
Okay--cool.
I'd say overall with Inez, she's a great team player,
but she's kind of flown under the radar.
She has yet to put her mark on any of these homes.
We're just trying to win for you, Jonathan!
My fireplace is comin' along.
I have to match the hearth to the fireplace.
I go with tumbled marble.
It's got the same color, but it also has an aged look to it.
Don't let me distract you, but...
And now here comes Jonathan.
See, if I put this here, Yeah.
now it just looks unfinished on the edge,
so you wanna just take down the edge, just round it off...
Oh, that's much better.
Jonathan's my mentor--I'm glad he's teachin' me something.
I love learning.
Torche--she's got great ideas,
but she's like a lone wolf.
I would like to see that she's willing to work better as a team.
(Francis) Be careful to not dirty your shirt.
[Jonathan laughs]
If you dirty your shirt, your brother will be furious.
He's not gonna wear an apron... oh my gosh.
This is like Team Dork now.
Just because I'm a contractor doesn't mean I have no sense of fashion.
You entertain me, Francis.
My team has my personality-- they're very similar
in their sense of humor and their work ethic,
but I wanna see that they're focused
and that they're actually doing a quality job.
So...knowing your personality
and the color you like to introduce to a space,
I will be very disappointed if I walk in this room
and it's boring, because I do not feel
like you are a boring person at all.
Okay.
to give a pop of color.
Okay.
fuchsia, and maybe some lime-y green.
I am dying to see what Francis's artwork is gonna look like,
because most of the color choices he's made haven't impressed me.
If it's as wild and crazy as I assume it's gonna be,
that's not gonna raise the property value,
and that doesn't bode well for him.
I'm not going anywhere.
(Brett) There we go.
(Monica) Beautiful.
Just give this a little knock.
Drew emphasizes quality a lot.
So I'm replacing all the window panes,
Perfection.
because frosted glass... [laughs]
is very much out of style now.
Got it.
So I'm popping out the window panes, and I'm just gonna put clear glass in.
It's gonna brighten the whole space up.
There we go.
With elimination right around the corner, I'm hoping
this is gonna be a big win for me.
Oooh!
(David) So I start the fireplace.
Thirty-five and a half.
The most challenging part of my room
is the mantel shelf.
If you don't cut the wood right,
it's gonna look like a botched mess.
You have to float the whole thing out a little bit.
This challenge-- it's getting serious.
We all know that our individuality really has to come out,
because ultimately, it's one person that wins this.
It ain't easy.
In this challenge, Drew's watching our every move--
he's literally watching every detail, so...
it's tough, the mood is tense--
no one wants to go home.
I'm helping David in the living room with the painting.
Because this room is very tall, it's gonna be a lot to paint.
My laundry room is not where I want it to be
because I'm still waiting to hear whether or not
I'm getting the stackable washer and dryer.
I just, uh, am not sure what I can do in here.
So I'm helping out in the living room.
Yeah.
Okay.
Christy comes in and starts painting,
and I'm not quite sure why she's helping in there,
because the laundry room is not in great condition.
(Christy) Hello, hello, hello!
So, gettin' some nice light gray up on the wall.
Yeah, I really like the color.
My team is working their butts off,
because nobody wants to look like their slacking.
And this is gonna be a lot to finish.
Why don't you come down, and I'll just a bit of the cutting.
So I'm gonna jump in and help out.
I will point out that Jonathan, as much as he's the contractor,
[Christy laughs]
I have very high standards, and my team has to live up to that.
It's okay, right?
That's pretty good.
(Drew) I'm gonna look at everything that they're doing, and they need to impress me.
Yes.
I'm almost done putting in the windowpanes.
So how do you think you compare to the rest of the team.
I think you can't just be great at one thing,
Right.
Drew is really putting the pressure on.
Why don't I take this over, you can grab one of the other windows...
A lot to do today.
I am absolutely determined-- I'm on the Internet
looking for appliances for the kitchen.
They're so expensive.
We've hit a stumbling block--
we don't have money for stackables.
No.
We have to have the kitchen right.
We can't do it-- we don't have the money.
When I realize that I'm not gonna get
the stackables, I start to freak out.
What am I going to do?
It's literally starting over again.
Get your "Brother vs. Brother" fix at hgtv.com/brothers.
(David) Good to go.
(Monica) Do you know where the dark paint is?
(Brett) It looks so much better, doesn't it?
I'm not going to get the stackables for the laundry room,
so I have to now come up with a completely new plan.
Sixteen-inch base...
But we have so much work to do with the rest of the house,
so I'm going to keep focusing on progress in the living room.
Hey, gang!
(Monica) Hey, Drew.
This is the last chance I'm gonna get to check in
with my team before I send somebody home.
I have to look at who's gonna make us stronger when we're down to three people.
I see you've come a long way-- how much work have you guys done in
I can't work in the laundry room right now.
I've had to, just, rework the plan,
because we have to reuse their old washer and dryer.
Okay.
I'm in charge of the budget, so if Drew is not happy
with the new plan, it could end up falling completely on me.
Of course!
So what I'm going to do now
is use their existing units,
and then over here is a tall, narrow pantry unit
that's actually going to be more for, like, storage.
Okay, from what you're explaining to me now,
we have far less storage than what they originally had.
You need that stackable.
Oh, crap-- maybe I didn't do this right.
Maybe I should have taken a bigger stand on the stackables.
Come on in here guys-- everyone in here.
You're all strong players, but now it's my time
to make a choice as to which one of the four of you is actually going home.
I want to have one last look on my own, and then
I'll meet you in the living room, and we'll discuss from there.
Okay? Thanks, guys.
Watch your step! Hoo!
[in a sing-song voice] La la la la.
Time is almost up,
and I'm finishing my art piece for the dining room.
Beautiful.
I'm a dancer, so movement is something very important.
Paint is dancing on a piece of plywood... this is just spectacular.
Hey!
It's good--I've got my room painted.
It's judgement time, and I need
the strongest team possible to continue to beat Team Drew.
Yes, all by myself.
My concern is that
you aren't as good a team player...
you really seem like a lone wolf.
(Torche) I mean, I usually take on
a pretty big thing to do by myself, so...
I will say you don't back down.
In this competition, one person's gonna win $50,000.
So I'm gonna do whatever it takes to win this.
Well thanks for all your mentoring.
That is a beautiful color.
I was hopin' to have a little more done,
but I wouldn't sacrifice quality.
It does show me that you know what you're doing,
but it's a little foggy as to what your actual design style is.
I don't like to pigeonhole myself into one category of design...
every decision that I make is what's gonna add
the most value to these properties.
I just hope Jonathan can see my skill set and allow me
the opportunity to show my design abilities.
Put it here--whatever happens...
Whatever happens, thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
Hey, Jonathan.
Here I was looking forward to countertops...
Doing the backsplash first, and then I'm gonna come in and frame for the countertops.
I feel like I don't have any idea of what your design style is.
I've been hesitant to take ownership of one specific thing
because I was more interested in winning as a team,
but you will see my design style.
Everything's gonna be nice and clean and modern.
I am the biggest team player,
but maybe that's my weakness.
I'll let you get back to it.
So it's the artist at work.
Some of my ideas are more edgy,
but I can think a little bit beyond what the average
person thinks of.
I am impressed.
As nice as my art piece is,
the competition is about raising value to the property.
So whatever happens here in the next few minutes,
I'm very proud of everything that you've done, and...
Why don't you come back inside with me.
So I wonder...have I done enough to stay in this competition?
Coming up...
I wanna make this the strongest team possible moving forward.
Somebody's going home.
Here's a renovation comparison brought to by autotrader.com.
On "Brother vs. Brother", there are many ways to increase property value.
Adding a sophisticated mantel can transform an ordinary fireplace
from simple to stunning,
and a dramatic wall mount can give a classic fireplace a modern update.
A side-by-side comparison shows how both can really
increase the value of a home,
but which adds more to the bottom line?

I feel with all of you, I've grown very close,
we've learned a lot about each other.
I'm your mentor, and so I want to make this
the strongest team possible moving forward.
So who do you think will strengthen the team the most?
I think, for me, my strongest points
are the fact that I have the design eye, I have the hands-on ability.
I've never stopped--no job is too big or too small-- I'm pretty well rounded.
I specialize in high-end renovations--
I offer quality,
and I'm the package you are looking for,
especially if you want to win against your brother.
I'm not gonna blab Jonathan's ear off with a bunch of BS,
because I'm good at what I do.
I think we have every ingredient to beat the other team,
but the one thing that puts us over the top is the fact that we have the creativity here,
so I want to see the creativity among all of you.
Inez, I like your ideas...
but you have not wowed me, to date,
on anything that you've done.
I'm very frustrated that I didn't put my stamp on something soon enough.
I really want to show Jonathan what I can do.
Mark, you're very skilled, but there's that same problem
that I have with Inez-- I don't really know your style.
Francis and Torche...
you're safe tonight.
Inez and Mark...
one of you will be eliminated tonight.
I'm stunned-- I really cannot believe I'm one of the bottom two.
I'm gonna have to fight hard here to stay in this competition.
You're all really strong in your own ways,
but if you want to be an all around home improvement expert,
you have to be well-rounded-- you have to know the numbers side of it,
you have to know the physical side of it,
and you have to manage your time efficiently.
The laundry facility, Christy, is your responsibility.
We should have been a lot further along in that space.
Christy, unfortunately, you're on the chopping block tonight.
This is just mind numbing.
There's, like, this heavy feeling
that just sort of goes whoosh!
But budget comes down to you, Monica.
You were the one who has said, no, we cannot go for a stackable washer/dryer.
That means that that laundry space has been a complete waste.
Monica, you're gonna be on the chopping block, as well.
There's a lot at stake for me.
I want recognition for the work that I do.
I came here to win this game,
and I will stop at nothing.
With this being a competition, someone has to go home.
Christy and Monica, it's between the two of you.
Monica, you've decided not to go with stackable because of budget.
Now, I know what your budgets are.
I'm telling you right now, you have to find a way
in that laundry facility to put a stackable.
Christy, if you wanna be a home improvement expert,
you really have to be able to fight back a bit.
If I know I need to put a stackable in that laundry room to change the layout
to add value, I'm gonna find a way to do it.
I've made my decision.
Christy...
unfortunately, you're going home.
I'm so honored that I got to be a part of this team,
because you guys are all top notch professionals.
[laughs]
Thanks for working with us.
It's just such a bummer to go home.
My only regret is not being a little bit more aggressive.
But you better believe I'm gonna work on that.
Inez and Mark...
it's important to continue to hone the creative side of the team,
and I think the best way to do that...
is to send you home today, Inez.
Come here.
I will say to the rest of you guys,
I think we're losing the best team player.
So do not let this team fall apart.
See you, Jonathan.
And then there were three.
I'm really disappointed, but in the end, I understand
I needed to put my mark on something, so...
It's a blessing to have made it this far.
Hey.
Toughest one yet.
I know, it was really tough-- I mean, my team works so well together.
That's one thing I wish my team did do a little better,
I wish they worked closer together.
That's okay, I mean my team can come over and show you guys how to do some of this.
No.
Next time...
There are less of you now to handle the huge workload.
There's a lot of work to be done.
Jonathan can no longer say he's the only handy one in this crowd.
Tensions are very, very high.
You are saying to people, "Do this, do that."
I don't like your energy.
They've gotta start working together because I would just love
to beat Drew so badly.
You guys see how cocky Jonathan's being?
I wanna make sure we destroy them.
Like an eight.
I'll be the judge of that.
Wow!
(David Visentin) They did a beautiful job.
(Hilary) It's pretty impressive what you guys managed to pull off.
The question is... was it enough?
