There are so many zombie games. Each with their own twist but they all boil down to
just killing more zombies. I would say that zombies have officially replaced Nazis as
the favorite target of shooters. We started with aliens, then moved to Nazis, and now
zombies, with a quick stop at terrorists along the way.
Here we have Burn Zombie Burn!, another game that tries to distinguish itself in a super
saturated market. You play the game as Bruce, which the character and the name are obviously
a nod to Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame. You play in a enclosed area and much survive
the endless waves of zombies that attack. The number of zombies starts off reasonable
but soon turns up the heat, as the entire map will be filled with armies of the undead.
You start off with a simple handgun but soon will have to find stronger weapons. The weapons
only last for so long, so pacing yourself is a must. But the big deal is the big red
button. After you collect enough kill sprees, you can push the big red button which will
do something definitely worthwhile.
The game has a certain humor to it. Bruce will pull out his comb and give a greaser
smile as he fixes his hair. A lot of the game has subtle references to famous zombies movies,
even down to the weapons. Like being able to pick up a lawnmower and hold it out in
front of you and run into the hordes. Dead Alive, anyone? That is the style of the game,
fun and campy. The levels have the same feel, like a summer camp that feels right out of
Friday the 13th. And all the levels have a nice cel-shaded look, which feels like a B-movie,
which adds to appeal.
There is your standard Freeplay game mode but there are also some other that mix things
up a little. Like Defense, where your girlfriend Daisy is tied up and you must do all you can
to keep her safe, by setting the zombies on fire and watching as the game lives up to
its name. But there is also a challenge mode, which mixes up the game’s mechanics to add
in some more challenge.
While it’s in nowhere as deep as other zombies shooters like Left 4 Dead, Burn Zombie Burn!
is fun and aesthetically pleasing. With it campy B-movie feel, fun references to past
zombie movies, and simple pick up and play gameplay, anyone will find something to like
here.
