I'd be lying if I said the news of Pope Ratzinger's resignation didn't overjoy me. Indeed, the
news brought me much happiness; this homophobic, sexist, bigoted, dishonest, and apparently
"infallible" old codger is actually stepping down, and the first pope to willingly do so
in 800 years. Why wouldn't I be satisfied? After all, it was this pope who covered up
sex abuse within the Catholic Church and failed to reprimand those priests that sexually abused
countless numbers of small boys. It was this pope that blessed Rebecca Kadaga, the main
lawmaker backing the "Kill the Gays" bill in Uganda. It was this pope that staunchly
opposed the use of condoms when much of Africa was in an ***/AIDS epidemic; thankfully Ratzinger's
conscious got the best of him and he slightly altered his views in late 2010. His teachings
on condoms still contributed to the massive AIDS epidemic in Africa, however, and Ratzinger
should apologize immediately. It was this pope that took the usual, hardline conservative
stance on women priests and homosexuals. Yes, Ratzinger condemned homosexuality and was
strongly opposed to the priesthood of women. It was this pope that blamed secularism for
Nazism (when in reality, Adolf Hitler and his followers were Catholic and Ratzinger
was a Nazi youth himself -- he did eventually leave the German army before the war ended,
to his credit). It was this pope that favored sainthood of Pius the 12th (XII) who was pope
during World War II. Pius, of course, is well-known for his almost silent stance on Hitler's regime
and has been strongly criticized for not speaking out enough against the Holocaust. It's times
like this where I truly wish Christopher Hitchens were alive. The Hitch was a staunch critic
of Ratzinger and I only wish Christopher would've been alive today to see the resignation of
this bigoted old buffoon. He'd also be overjoyed. But, dwelling on impossibilities won't help
anything. The best thing to do is be grateful that Ratzinger is quitting. However, the Catholic
Church will probably find another bigoted, homophobic, sexist codger to replace him,
so don't get too excited. But I digress. I have a question for you Catholics: seeing
as how Ratzinger is still alive but another pope will soon take his place, will there
be two infallible people on Earth now? What if these two "infallible" men disagree? Oh
what fun that will be.
