Like most federal staging areas,
we’re sitting here with commodities
ready to support the state
and the citizens of the state of Louisiana
in the event of the flood.
What we have is water,
we have food, we have cots,
blankets, generators and, of course,
we have the new CUSI kits.
The CUSI kits are designed for use
at the shelters themselves.
It’s a kit made up of those items
that the shelter would need
in the event that they had to set up
and support the population
that was displaced by a disaster.
The actual kits are made up
of 8 different components.
There’s the hygiene component,
which has personal care items.
There would be
the durable medical equipment component,
which is like wheelchairs and crutches.
The expendable medical supply part.
We also have
what you’re going to see today,
the toddler and infant kit,
which supports toddlers and infants
with food, diapers, formula,
that kind of items.
Administrator Fugate is directing
that we establish this component
so that we can better support
the population and the shelters
as they support the needs
of the individual survivors.
