What would it take for you to not vote Democratic?
David: In the presidential election, or just in general?
Louis: You know what? In general.
David: I mean, there's often times where in different local elections I would vote for
someone... there's often unaffiliated races or, I'm trying to think if I have voted for
any Republicans. I don't actually think so. There's very few Republicans running locally
here in Massachusetts. For me to not vote for a Democrat in the presidential election,
there would really have to be a compelling reason to think that I would-- my vote would
have a better chance of effecting real change on the political system by voting for someone
else, and that is change that I would like.
So when it comes down to Democrats and Republicans on the whole being pretty similar on most
issues, Democrats not proposing completely absurd social policy, I'll vote for the Democrats
even though there's plenty of negative, as I get criticized all the time for criticizing
Barack Obama. And I mean, and again, I don't also want to just get involved in voting for
a third party for the sake of voting for a third party, I've been critical of Ralph Nader
and for these other Nader-effect situations we've had, so it would really take me thinking
that the best option...
Louis: The best option for the country.
David: ... actually has a chance to win, as opposed to maybe getting us the worst option,
which is really the fear when you vote for third parties.
Louis: So it's within the realm of possibilities?
David: Of course. I'll vote for anybody, if I think... the best candidate that I believe
has a shot to win is who I will vote for. I don't care about the party.
Louis: There it is.
David: So let's take a break. If you're on a smart phone, Android or iPhone, make sure
to get the Stitcher app and look up The David Pakman Show. We'll be back after this with
plenty more.
