With all the . . . with the recent downturn we had in the economy and with
the home foreclosures, there's been one of the more frequently asked
questions of people that have bought a foreclosed home. They've called us
to redo their yard: How do we get rid of the old sod or what's left there?
There's just a couple of things: If the yard is healthy but just needs
redoing and it has a lot of green in it, then you might want to go . . .
you can go to different rentals and rent what's called a walk-behind sod
cutter. There's Turfco, there's Ryan Sod Cutters. If you want to do it
yourself, it has an oscillated blade like we had when we harvest our sod
that will break it up. You want to cut it up and put it in a dumpster, put
it in a compost pile, or get rid of it, get it off the site. Then that's
when you'll do like you would with a regular, but it may be a little more
difficult. You take a tiller and start working it up and adding back your .
. . rebuilding your sod with your soil amendments. You can call us; we do
provide that service. We try not to compete against our landscapers that
buy from us. You could call a landscaper, they can do it.
If the yard is mainly dead or just very little, you can take whatever
herbicide and kill off what's left. If it's not real thatchy and there's
not a lot left, you can simply take the tiller and work into the existing
soil. There's various ways, and it'll depend on how much of the old sod is
still alive, how spongy it is, or how thick what's left in the ground and
whether you want to work it in or not. Sometimes when you work it in or try
to till it in the soil, you're going to wind up having to rake up most of
it and just get it out of the way. It'll be in clumps.
Again, walk-behind sod harvesters are readily available and you can rent
them at most places. I think, I don't know . . . most lawn and garden
stores can tell you. If you want someone to do it, we can refer you to one
of our landscapers, or perhaps sometimes, we do that type of work. Let us
know what we can do to help you.
