Hi, I’m Sadiah Qureshi and I’m a Lecturer in History here at the University of Birmingham.
So as a historian I’m interested in the connections between science, race and empire
in the modern world and at the moment I’m working on a book about the notion of endangered
races and I’m interested in how and why people come to be seen as in danger and once
they’re seen as endangered, what do you do about it? For instance, do you step in
and protect them through forms of humanitarianism?
My research is really, really important in terms of informing what I do as a teacher.
Most importantly I’m interested in getting students to think about forgotten and lost
connections that are important, partly because of their modern political resonance. So for
instance, in terms of thinking about extinction, it’s all about tying into modern ideas about
conservation but remembering that these debates once applied to human beings too.
The thing I enjoy most about being at the University of Birmingham is working with students.
It’s one of the most rewarding elements of the job but at the same time it helps me
think about how to present my research to lots of different kinds of communities because
we have such a diverse student body here and those things brought together make it an important
place for me to flourish both as an academic and as a teacher.
