What I am about to narrate to you
is a report which only
those deserving of it [through knowledge and piety]
understand it. Marhoom
Sayid Abdullah Hadi Shirazi
was a pious man.
In brief,
we
might not have become a [pious] human being but have seen [many] pious human beings. We saw people who in reality
where deserving of being called
a [pious] human being. First of all,
this man was a faqih [i.e., those who attain expertise in Islamic Jurisprudence and have gained the level of ijtihad]
very few of which is found to have attained his status.
The great status of such a person has to be acknowledged
in terms of both his knowledge and deeds.
Five complete mujtahids [those who have attained expertise in Islamic jurisprudence and who can deduct Islamic laws by themselves]
where his students.
at a time when we
used to go to his lectures I looked around
and saw five complete mujtahids [who were experts in every aspect of Islamic jurisprudence]
not partial mujtahids [who have expertise in some Islamic jurisprudence
sitting in Sayid Abdul Hadi's lecture.
One of them was marhoom Sayid Ali Beheshti.
Such individuals
were attending his lectures.
Well he lost his sight.
There was a person by the name of Sayid Ja'far (Allah have mercy on him) who was the brother of Mirza Mahdi Shirazi
who
Mirza Mahdi Shirazi was the father of
Sayid Muhammad Shirazi.
They [Sayid Ja'far and Mirza Mahdi Shirazi] were Sayid Abdul Hadi's brother-in-laws.
Sayid Ja'far
would come everyday
and study Islamic laws and
debate about the topics with Sayid Abdul Hadi.
This was their programme. I too
would always sit next to Sayid Abdul Hadi.
Sayid Ja'far went to Tehran.
He became sick in Tehran and passed away.
The news of his passing
reached Najaf.
That same day I was next to Sayid Abdul Hadi.
He leant over and
whispered in my ears saying:
until now I have not told this to anyone but now that Sayid Ja'far has passed away
I am going to narrate this.
All of us
paid close attention to see what he was going to say because
things he said were very valuable. He didn't just say something
for no good reason.
He said, "In this very courtyard
One night
I was sleeping.
I saw a dream that the door opened.
Two sits were brought forward and placed here. Then
I saw the Master of Martyrs in the front
and Hazrat Abbas following behind him.
They came
and sat on these two seats. Then
Hazrat Abbas opened a book
and I could see
the names." Now consider
the person who is narrating the dream is Sayid Abdul Hadi
and the dream is such an extraordinary dream.
He said:
"I was reading the names when Hazrat [Imam Husayn (S)]
said to the Hazrat Abbas
cross out
this name.
Really, one shivers at the thought.
Hazrat Abbas crossed out the name.
The he said that instead of the name of this person
write Sayid Ja'far's name.
Hazrat Abbas wrote Sayid Ja'far's name.
He then closed the book
and the Master of Martyrs in the front and Hazrat Abbas following behind him
left and then I woke up.
Hazrat [Imam Husayn (S)] left and
so did Hazrat Abbas.
I was left dumbfounded about what that was about.
At this point I am eager so that
morning arrives and Sayid Ja`far comes here.
Morning came.
Sayid Ja'far based on his everyday practice
came.
When he came he saw that I was anxious.
I said to Said Ja'far that
I have not slept from last night until today
and proceeded to narrate my dream.
I said to him
has something happened to you. As soon as I said that he became emotional.
Now see what is going on.
That world, how we lack understanding of it.
He became emotional and
said that there was only one case which I can think of and no other.
Last night was the first eve of the month of Muharram.
I came out of the shrine of the Commander of the Faithful [i.e., Imam Ali (S)].
Suddenly this thought came to my mind that
that through my entire life
I cried for the Master of Martyrs
but I did not cause anyone to become emotional and cry [through the narrating of Imam Husayn's tragedy].
This thought was eating away at my mind
at my soul
I saw that I could not go back home.
I went to the houses of my friends.
I kept knocking on their doors asking for a book of maqtal [narrating the martyrdom of the Imam Husayn (S)].
Finally,
one of
my friends who I knocked at his door said that
I have [the book] Jala` al-Uyun written by [Allamah] Majlisi.
I took this book and
came back home, collected my wife and children together
and said that tonight is the first eve of Muharram.
From tonight I will read and you guys cry.
The only thing which I have done is this.
Now this is what astonishes the mind.
That same night that Sayid Ja'far did this,
that very same night
Sayid Abdul Hadi sees this dream.
That very same night!
However, that poor soul whose
name was crossed out,
what was it that he did? One can understand
many things from this dream.
Firstly, the name which is written down [one must understand why it was written down].
However, that name remaining in the book
is impossible to prove, so that it [the name] is not crossed out.
In brief, that world is an amazing world.
