well one of the things that I see not really happening is most of the schools want to wait until they are sixteen before they become proactive
um... and supporting individual with life skills vocational skills
and things and then instead
and those skills need to be developed early for um... students with autism
um... and some of those life skills and things need to be
incorporated much younger than waiting until they're sixteen and that's one of
the things that I think they could do that benefit the other part of it is
that's as their transitioning many times after high school when the are
transition into adult live there's very little supports a very little uh...
carryovers supports and that happens once we're an adult and so I think it's
good that it's good that the schools begin their work with families a lot
sooner and then waiting until they get close to graduation before they
start looking at those transitional things I think that it should be
individualized according to the individuals needs but it should
start in elementary school we don't want to teach individuals with autism
when they're sixteen the concept of money in the value of money where we can
start teaching in an elementary even in their daily living about purchasing
items that they want or the value of something that they want with
money exchange um... those are some of the life skills that we don't work on our
individuals with autism even many of our
kids with autism
avoid telephones avoid using the telephone many of us because we've
had very little exposure in training um... on how to effectively use the telephone
so that we can overcome these anxieties but um... as we become adults those
sometimes crucial things for us to learn how to use to reach out to supports
and to get help as we needed and to ask the various questions that we
need
