To me, Bond moments have to do with close calls; being on the verge of getting caught.
I had the requirement to place a bug in the residence of one of our top performing assets.
I was invited to a reception at the home of this asset, my wife accompanied me.
It was very formal, very small group, but formal; tuxedos, black tie.
When we got there, I said to my wife, at some point, I'll give you the high sign, what I
want you to do is just keep him occupied.
I excused myself, went downstairs to his office area, I layer on my back under the desk, placed
a handkerchief over my chest to catch the shavings and drilled small holes.
I placed the bug, screwed it in, brushed the shavings onto the handkerchief, took that
put them in my pocket and returned to the reception.
No one had noticed that I was missing, no one asked where I had been, right out of a
Bond film we had a van with a guy with headphones in there and he overheard a conversation between
this asset who was under suspicion by us with a hostile intelligence service.
At that time, we simply decided to terminate the asset.
We never gave him a reason why and so the operation, which was to determine if he had
been double, was working against us, was totally successful.
But, for a moment, lying under that desk, I had to think of what my response would have
been if he had come into the office.
