Funny Books: The History of Batman. Like the character himself
the origin of Batman is shrouded in mystery. He debuted
in Detective Comics 27 in 1939,
and was largely influenced by Caped Crusaders
like the Scarlet Pimpernel, Zorro, and The Shadow.
Who exactly created the character himself however is a whole
other story. As it now of credit for the creation a Batman
legally goes to Bob Kain, who asked for a mandatory created byline
in exchange for the rights to the character. His character however
had big red tights and mechanical wings
and was inspired by movies such as The Bat Whispers
and Dracula. Kane asked writer Bill Finger
for help with this character. Feeling that Kane's Batman
looked too much like Superman, Finger redesigned him.
Adding dark colors, bats ears, and a Ca[ed and Cowl
Finger basically created the Dark Knight we all know and love.
Finger also wrote the very first Batman stories in Detective Comics
creating Bruce Wayne, *** Grayson
Gotham City, the Bat Cave, the Batmobile
Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler
Two Face, and even the original Joker story
Finger however did not receive an iota of credit
thanks to the efforts of Bob Kane. Kane wrote his feelings on the subject
in 1965 letter which I will now read
in a dismissive voice.
Thanks for watchin, and remember:
"I'm Batman!"
