Welcome to this week's Bay State Brief, a behind the scenes look on the road with the
governor. On Monday, March 28, Governor Patrick went
to the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts Annual Legislator's Dinner.
At the event, the governor recognized the commitment of the firefighters and their families.
On Tuesday morning, the governor visited Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead with congressman
John Tierney. The school has a tutoring program with Robert
L. Ford K-8 NASA Explorer School in Lynn. The Cohen Hillel Academy Mentor Program for
Students, also known as CHAMPS, pairs elementary school students with middle schoolers to help
them prepare for their MCAS math tests. "They are doing a marvelous.
And you say it. They are very serious about it.
Very engaged and a lot of good results to come from.
So it's a. Kudos to the academy and most of all to the
students." On Wednesday, the governor spoke at the Social
Worker's Annual Legislative Day. The focus of this year's event was "Advocating
for Tolerance in an era of prejudice," highlighting social problems such as LGBT and immigrant
discrimination. Later that day, the governor attended a reception
honoring 10 minority women appointed to the state judiciary during his administration.
"It's wonderful, wonderful what we have done and what we are doing by bringing new talent,
fresh talent from some quarters where people didn't always realize what you and I know.
Which is that there is talent in every community in the Commonwealth. Every single one."
*Applause* On Friday, Governor Patrick attended the 64th
Annual Student Government Day. Student Government Day provides high school
students an opportunity to learn first hand about state government.
Students attended mock committee hearings and Congress sessions, as well as having the
chance to interact with government officials. "I want to thank you all for deciding to become
involved in your government. This is your government. It belongs to you
just as much as it does to anyone else. What we do in this building reflects, and
will affect you and your future. And it's important that you are involved."
